Sorry this chapter is really short :(
Earlier that day, Julie had told the man who owned the refuge that she wasn't feeling well. She didn't expect him to care- and he didn't. She innocently suggested that he leave the window open so that she could have some fresh air. After all, it was better than having to pay a doctor. Finally, he agreed and left the window open, just a crack.
That night, Julie tip-toed over to the window and struggled to force it open enough so that she could slip through. It was not that it was hard to get open; it was just hard to open without making a lot of noise.
Finally, she managed to get it open. She glanced back at the vacant room. Grinning, she waved at a rat that was scuttling across the floor. She held her breath and, soundlessly, she crawled out. A cool summer breeze hit her as she stepped onto the roof.
"Freedom," Julie breathed. She stared at the night sky, marveling at the blanket of stars that covered the darkness. She pointed to the Orion constellation, as she had so many times with her mother, and smiled.
She climbed across the roof, careful not to make too much noise. When she got to the edge, she looked down. She was very high up. She was glad she wasn't afraid of heights. She leapt down from the roof, and over the towering gates that she had been locked behind for so many years. Luckily, she managed to land without injuring herself. She glanced around, making sure nobody was around to witness her escape. No one was in sight.
She laughed softly and hurried off into the darkness. No one would ever lock her up again.
