This was it. It was the day of the rally. Julie was lying on her stomach, painting a wooden sign so that it said Manhattan in giant blue letters.
"How's that?" she asked Davey, who was watching over her shoulder.
"Perfect," he said, grinning excitedly. She smiled back and stood up, glancing around.
"Ok, so it looks like everyone's here," she began. She counted Specs, Race, Romeo, Mush, Les, and (obviously) Davey. Everyone except...
"Where's Jack?" Les asked, looking around for the older boy, as if he might be hiding somewhere.
"I dunno," Davey said, confused.
"He'll be here," Julie reassured him. "He wouldn't abandon us." Deep down, she was a little worried. What if he did abandon them, like he abandoned Crutchie. "He'll be here," she repeated, more to herself than the others.
Suddenly, music could be heard off in the distance. Voices started to sing, getting louder and louder by the second.
Newsies need our help today
(Newsies need our help today)
Tell 'em Brooklyn's on their way
(Tell 'em Brooklyn's on their way)
We're from Brooklyn
We are Newsies
We are Brooklyn Newsies!!!!!!
Just got word that our buddies are hurtin'
Facing total disaster for certain
That's our cue, boys its time ta go slumming
Tell Manhattan the cavalry"s comin'
Julie and Davey glanced at each other, excitement etched across their faces.
As the song progressed, Spot Conlon and his newsies came into view. When they finished the song, Spot glanced over at his sister and waved. Mikey, who was standing beside him, grinned at her.
Suddenly, Jack stormed onto the scene, scowling.
"Jack!" Davey exclaimed, about to run to greet him, but stopped short at the look on his face.
"Listen up guys," he said, and heaved a sigh. "I don't think dis is such a good idea anymore. The strike, I mean."
Every way you turned, newsies were yelling at Jack. Julie shook her head in disbelief. She wiped away the angry tears that had sprung to her eyes.
Jack caught her eye, and upon seeing the look on her face, quickly hurried over. "Julie..." he began.
"Save it," she fumed, turning away. "So much for trust."
