As Julie ran, she tried to wrap her mind around what had just happened. How had everything gone so wrong? She loved Mikey like a brother, and it killed her to break his heart. But there was nothing she could do. She could never truly love Mikey. Honestly, even if she never saw Crutchie again, which was not going to happen if she had anything to do with it, her heart wouldn't let her develop feelings for anyone else.

Her muscles started to burn and she slowed, breathing heavily. She glanced around and realized that without knowing it, she had come to a stop in front of the refuge's tall metal gates. Crutchie. He was so close, she couldn't stand it. Making sure no one saw, she slipped through the gates and ran across the grounds. Within minutes, she pulled herself through the window. The room was deserted.

She crept over to the bed she knew belonged to Crutchie, and sat down. She then took out a piece of paper and scrawled a message on it.

Crutchie~

I know you told me not to come back here, but I needed to tell you something. You remember Mikey, right? We were talking, alone, in the willow grove, and he kissed me. He told me that he had loved me since we were children, and asked me if I could try to love him back. I told him I can't. I love YOU. I ran away, but not before I saw the look on his face. It was horrible! It broke my heart, seeing him so sad, so lonely. I don't know what to do! I feel so lost and confused. I miss you. If only you were with me, I'd feel stronger. I love you, always.

                                                                                                                           With Love ~ Julie

She set the note down on the bed, and sighed. She stood and made her way to the window, slipping through it. She hadn't noticed Mikey watching her. He had followed her to the refuge, and when she wasn't looking, he came through the window, hiding in the shadows. When she was gone, he picked up the note and read it.

"Why couldn't it have been me?" he whispered. "Me dat she loved so much? Me dat made her feel safe, stronger?" He set the note back on the bed, tears rolling down his cheek. He sat on the bed, crying, until the door opened, and Crutchie limped in.
