Three young children were running around outside. The youngest was a boy with dirty blonde hair and bight blue eyes. He was about about six years old. The middle child was a girl with her long brown hair braided down her back, with shining green eyes. She was about seven. The oldest was a handsome young boy with jet black hair and brown eyes. He was about ten.

The oldest started sprinting. The girl started to run after him, but tripped on her skirt. She got up quickly and brushed herself off. The older boy laughed. "Can't catch me!" he smirked.

"Spot!" the girl exclaimed. She ran after him.

"Yes, my lady Juliet?" his voice mockingly polite. She scowled at him. He knew she hated when anyone but their mother called her by her full name. She had almost caught up with him when the other boy called out to her.

"Julie!" the younger boy exclaimed. Julie turned. Spot sprinted away.

"Thanks Mikey!" he laughed.

"Oh!" she glared at the younger boy. "I see how it is!" she ran after the him. Soon she had caught up with him. She pushed him to the ground. "Got you!" she exclaimed grinning.

Mikey laughed and grinned up at her. "Michael!" a young woman called out. The three children turned.

"Yes, mom?" the younger boy asked.

"Time to go," she said.

Mikey sighed. "Do we have to go?" he pleaded.

"Yes," the woman said firmly. "Go say thank you to Ms. Evans for having us." Eliza Evans appeared behind her.

"Thank you for having us," he smiled at his best friends' mother.

"Thank you for coming!" she laughed, and then turned to his mother. "Katie, do come back soon. Your visits help me with Richard, and the children should not be apart for so long."

Katie smiled. "Well, then I suppose I will have to return soon!" She waved and motioned for mikey to follow her.

"Bye!" the boy exclaimed.

"Bye!" Julie and Spot chorused.

A couple months later, Julie and Spot hurried down the stairs laughing. When they arrived in the kitchen, they found their mother huddled on the wood floor clutching a piece of paper. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Mom!" Spot exclaimed. "What's wrong?" Eliza looked up and, hands shaking, handed the note to her son.

"Dear Ms. Evans," he read. "We regret to inform you that there has been a terrible fire. The Chase residence has burned to the ground. Unfortunately, there were no survivors. Katie and Michael Chase were killed in the fire." His voice trailed away. Julie started to weep. "No!" Spot yelled. "It's a lie! Isn't it mom?" his voice faltered as he looked at his mother, eyes pleading.

She shook her head slightly and stared at the floor. Spot fell to the ground beside his sister. "No," he muttered. A tear slipped down his cheek.

"Mikey," Julie whispered. She could hardly breathe. He was gone. Forever.
