Thanks for sticking with the story this far; you have absolutely no clue how much this means to me!!! Just thought I'd remind you that if you're reading this on the website, you will be able to see dedications, a cast list, and any video links that I put up. Thanks!
Sunlight seeped into the little grove of willow trees. Birds chirped. Julie's eyes fluttered open. The memories of the previous night came flooding back to her. She and Crutchie stayed there in the grove all night talking. They had finally fallen asleep right there, the trees sheltering them from the outside world.
Silently, she rose to her feet. She walked over her mom's grave. "Hi, mom," she whispered. "You don't have ta worry about me. I found someone. He's going ta stand by me no matter what. I love him." She smiled at the stone. Crutchie gently tapped her shoulder. She turned and kissed him on the cheek.
"Ready ta go?" he asked softly. She nodded and took a deep breath. They had decided the previous night that they would wait until the morning, and when all of the newsies were out buying their papers, they would go and talk to them, and explain the situation.
When they arrived at the distribution center, Race was pacing back and forth. The other newsies sat around, waiting. When he saw Julie and Crutchie approaching, a wave of relief came over his face. He ran over to them.
"Listen," he began.
"No,"Julie said. "You listen. I'm sorry I lied to you. All of you," she said, gesturing to other newsies."I'm sorry."
"Actually," Race said sheepishly. "I was gonna apologize" Julie raised her eyebrows.
"For what?" she asked, confused. She was the one who had lied to them, deceived them. Why was he apologizing?
"Da way I reacted," he said. "Of course ya would disguise yourself as a boy! Ya probably knew we didn't really have goil newsies!" Julie nodded.
"Well, Ise guess it's really up ta Jack, since he's da leader, but I say you can be da first," He continued. "Goil newsie, I mean."
Julie grinned and glanced sideways at Crutchie. He laughed. This was much easier than they had anticipated.
"So what da ya say?" Race asked.
"Sure," she laughed. Race spat on his hand and stuck it out to her. Julie did the same. They shook hands, smiling.
Romeo came over. "Say, what's ya name den?" he asked.
"Julie," she smiled."Julie Spear." Romeo nodded and grinned at her.
"So ya know whise dey call me Romeo, right?" he smiled flirtatiously. Julie shook her head. "It's 'cause Ise good wit da goils."
Julie laughed and turned to Crutchie, kissing his cheek lightly. Romeo's jaw dropped. Then he laughed and raised his eyebrows. "So, Crutchie's got himself a goil!"he exclaimed. Soon they were all laughing, and Julie knew that everything was going to be fine.
