The next morning, all of the newsies were sitting around an old restaurant, looking glum. All of the newsies, except Crutchie..... and Jack. Julie was crying softly, telling Mikey how Jack had abandoned Crutchie, and how she had snuck into the refuge to see him.
"I hated seeing him like dat," she whispered. "He couldn't even stand!" Mikey gently took her hand in his.
"Don't worry about him," he said in a comforting voice. "He's tough. He'll be alright." Julie smiled gratefully.
Suddenly, the door flung open. A tall, thin girl of about seventeen burst in. She had long, curly red hair, and bright blue eyes. Julie immediately recotnized her as Katherine Plumber, the only female reporter in New York. They had met her a few days ago, and she and Julie had become fast friends.
"Katherine!" Julie called out, rising out of her seat to greet her friend. She brushed a tear from her cheek. "Why are you so happy?" The other Newsies nodded and looked at her questioningly. Everyone was sitting around and moping, and Katherine was radiating energy and excitement.
"This is why!" she grinned, shoving a newspaper in the face of the newsie closest to her, Race. He began smiling like a lunatic, and stared at the paper.
"What is it?" Romeo asked impatiently. Race stood on a table and held the paper up for all to see. There, on the front page, was a photograph of the Newsies at the rally they had held the previous day. The story below it talked about their strike, and why they had organized it.
Cheers erupted from the Newsies. Everyone started talking at once. Katherine stood on the sidelines, grinning. Specs muttered something to Race, which Julie couldn't quite make out.
Suddenly, Race threw his hands in the air. "Ya don't need money when you're famous!!!" he yelled. "They gives ya whatevah ya wants, gratis!" Katherine giggled and looked at him quizzically.
"Such as?" Specs asked.
"A pair of new shoes wit matching laces," he began singing in response.
"A permanent box at the sheep head races," Romeo sang.
"Pastrami and rye with a sour pickle," another newsie -Henry- joined the song.
"My personal puss on a wooden nickel!" Mush added.
The four of them began singing together. "Look at me! I'm the king of New York! Suddenly, I'm respectable staring right atcha, lousy with stature! Nobbing with all the muckety mucks, I'm blowing my dough and goin' deluxe and there I
be, ain't I pretty, its my city, I'm the king of New York!"
Julie smiled weakly. The mood had been completely transformed. Out of nowhere, Race started to..........tap dance??? Julie giggled despite herself. She sighed and rolled her eyes. Soon, everyone but her was caught up in the enthusiastic whirlwind. Silently, she slipped out the door and stood alone in the very same hall where Crutchie had first discovered her secret.
"I have ta be strong," she whispered to herself. "For him. He wouldn't want me ta fall apart like this now would he?" She stayed out in the hall for a couple minutes before smiling slightly and rejoined the chaos as the newsies (and Katherine) finished singing the final bars of their spontaneous celebratory song.
