The next day, the newsies were standing around the distribution center. It almost seemed like nothing had happened the previous day, that they had not decided to go on strike. The one major difference was that no one was buying papers. No one, that is except..........

"HEY!" Jack shouted at a pale, thin boy of about fourteen with dirty blond hair "Whatcha think you're doing?" The boy turned, startled. In his hands, he clutched about fifty of the days newspapers. "We're going on strike! Ya can't just buy papes during a strike! Dat'd make ya a scab!"

The boy looked terrified. "But then how's Ise supposed ta eat?" Jack shrugged.

"Ya will figure somthin' out," he said. "Until den, put down dem papes." The boy shook his head. Jack sighed. "Okay, den," he muttered something to Race. "We can't have you messing up our strike, kid." He turned to the newsies and shouted,"Soak 'em!"

The newsies all charged at the boy. Julie, Crutchie, Specs, and Davey stood back, looking horrified. "STOP IT!" Julie screamed. Everyone froze. Newspapers were lying, shredded on the ground. The scab stood there in the middle of it all, with one black eye and tears streaming down his cheeks.

Julie walked up to the boy. "What's your name?" she asked kindly.

The boy, eyes wide, replied, "Michael. Michael Chase." Julie gasped. Every newsie turned to look at her. Michael Chase was the name she had taken when she had pretended to be a boy.

"Michael?" she whispered, her heart pounding. The boy looked confused.

"I'm sorry," he said. "But do I know you?" In response, Julie reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, faded notebook. She pressed it into his hands. He flipped through the pages, eyes growing wide. "Julie?" he looked at her. "Is it really you?"

"Okay, I give up," Jack said, annoyed. "Who is dis guy, and why did you say you were him?" Michael glanced at Julie, completely confused.

Julie sighed. "It's kinda a long story," she said.

"Well we ain't sellin' papes anymore, so we got all day, if that's how long ya need!" Race said.

Julie laughed. "Hopefully, it won't take that long!" With that, she began her story.
