Tears welled up in Julie's eyes. She felt as if her heart had shattered into a million pieces. She had spent most of her time burying the past deep inside of her. Now, remembering, she missed her mother more than ever. She would have been able to tell her what to do.
But Julie was as alone as ever. Her only friends probably hated her, and there was nothing she could do to change that. Julie sank to the ground, hands shaking, and let the tears spill down her cheeks. Suddenly, she felt someone gently lay a hand on her shoulder. She looked up. Crutchie was standing there, looking concerned.
He sat down beside her and wrapped his arms around her. "It's alright," he whispered. She only nodded and laid her head on his shoulder. They sat in silence for a while.
Finally, Julie spoke. "How'd ya find me?"
"After you ran off, I tried to follow ya, but I was too slow," he began. "I decided to check here because I remember that ya told me that you use to come here if ya was havin' trouble at home. I figured ya might, out of habit, come 'ere."
"Smart boy," she smiled. Her was was tear-streaked and smudged with dirt.
"Ya know they'll come around, right?" he said abruptly.
"What do ya mean?" she asked.
"Well, both me and Jack were both fine wit you bein' a goil," he started off, then broke away, blushing. "Ise more den fine wit it, actually."
Julie raised her eyebrows, confused. "What do ya mean by dat?" she questioned.
In response, Crutchie kissed her softly on the cheek. He pulled away quickly, embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I just...."
Julie smiled shyly. "Don't be," she whispered. Then, she leaned in and kissed him, and he kissed her back.
When he pulled away, he looked at her and smiled."I love you, ya know," he whispered.
She smiled at him. After denying it for so long, she finally knew it to be the truth. "I love you, too," she whispered.
