I moaned from the sunlight tapping against my face, waking me from my peaceful slumber I was too involved in at this moment. I wondered how long I had been sleeping as I closed my eyes, what had happened yesterday was something I didn't want to deal with today. I rolled over on to my side as the sunlight bathed my skin, shining through the blinds that had picked up dust over recent months, which reminded me that I did infact have to clean in here.
I looked around me, blinking as I did so as my eyes adjusted to the light. I yawned, sitting up suddenly making my stomach growl at the loss of food. A groan escaped my mouth as I leaned over to grab my comb from the table beside me, checking the time as I did so. Half past nine.
My head could have fell back into the array of pillows underneath me if I wasn't motivated, but today I wanted to get out of bed, strangely. There is no point in just wasting the day, I thought as I ran the comb through my messy dark brown hair, untangling the knots that had formed in my sleep.
Suddenly my phone buzzed beside me, at first I thought it was just a notification from some sort of website but it continued to vibrate, a call. I lay my comb down on the sheets beside me and picked the device up, squinting as I read who was calling me. Nina.
What was so important she had to tell me right now?
I cleared my throat and pressed the green button, answering her call.
"H-"
"Violet, it's Nina, where were you last night? I tried to call you but you didn't pick up."
"I was...wait, what time was this at?"
She took a pause before answering, telling me it was after 12, I must have slept through the noises of the phone ringing, I was that tired.
"So what did you want to tell me?"
"Okay. Right, I cannot tell you over the phone..I mean it's just too..ugh, whatever. Meet me today so we can talk in person?"
I immediately knew what she was going to ask before she said it to me. I fidgeted with the bedding covers as I thought about what to do.
"I guess I could, I'm intrigued as to what you have to say."
We both laughed and exchanged opinions before agreeing to meet at a café opposite to where we work. I had no idea what she was going to tell me about but I had a feeling from the tone of her voice that it was good news.
"See you soon then." I spoke as I began to get up, flattening my bedding as I did so, smoothing it down with the palm of my hand.
"Okay, bye." Nina replied before hanging up.
I threw my phone on my newly neat bed covers, sighing as I walked downstairs to make breakfast.
I had still got a good two hours left to get ready, enough time for me to have some food, wash my hair, and everything else.
I took a quick look in the mirror on the wall and decided to put my hair up for just now so it was out the way, a downside of having long hair, it is such a pain at times. I grabbed a hair tie off the table in the hall and began tying it back into a ponytail. I did so, and wiped around my eyes the remaining specks of black mascara that had worn off in the night, I must've been in such a rush to get to bed last night that my makeup remover didn't get all of it off.
A noise from the door interrupted me as about half a dozen letters came through the letterbox at once. I leant down to pick them up, flicking through and noticing a small light brown parcel buried within them. I placed all the other bills and other things I wasn't bothered about to the side and focused all my attention on this specific one, carrying it into the kitchen with me.
I put it down on the island in the middle of the room, putting two pieces of fresh bread into the toaster and grabbing a carton of fresh orange juice out of the fridge, pouring the last remaining drops into a clean glass. I began gulping it down as I walked back over to the parcel, picking it back up and examining it, my address scribbled down on the front in pen, someone had clearly wrote this for me. It didn't say who it was from or anything. I placed my glass of orange juice on the counter, using both hands to rip the parcel open, a written note falling out along with a heavy object tumbling out after, a book. I first picked up the white piece of paper, written in the same usual handwriting as before.
'Violet,
This is the same book we were doing a signing for, written by Alison Hale, 'Bullet in her back, rose in her hand.' Give it a read! I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Steve'It looked more interesing that it actually was to be honest, I was expecting something more exciting as I've never been someone who is a big reader, I'm more into writing or drawing myself.
I flipped the book over to see the title, having another few gulps of my juice before it had all gone. I read the title a couple of times over, staring into space as my toast popped out the toaster, making me jump a little. I put the book back down and buttered my toast, taking a bite as I walked into the lounge. The television was turned on moments later, I flicked through almost every channel to only find breakfast shows and repeated episodes of Coronation Street. I sighed and switched it off, walking back upstairs to have a shower and get ready to go to the café with Nina.
