Skylar's P.O.V.
I arrived at my waterfall about fifteen minutes after leaving the school. The walk usually takes me up to forty minutes, so I guess I run faster while trying to escape the hell of highschool.
I sit down on the edge of the cliff like I always do to talk to my mom. Even when she's not physically here, she gives the best advice.
"Hey, mom... I'm sorry it's been so long since I've come here. I usually run here when I'm upset, but the past couple weeks have actually been pretty great."
I inhale deeply, taking in the fresh spring air.
"My boyfriend and I had an argument today... Well, it wasn't really an argument, he didn't actually know he was saying anything wrong..."
A single tear slides down my cheek, slipping through my slightly parted lips. The salty drop is the trigger for many more as I break down.
"Oh momma, everything's a mess." I cry. "Everything was so great. But today I found out that Mia, you know, that girl I told you about last visit... She broke up with Zay because she's in love with Grayson."
The wind picks up for a few seconds, then settles once again. I smile slightly, taking that as my mother's way of telling me she's here.
"Grayson didn't know she loved him. He just thought some guy had been flirting with her, and she fell for him. He kept saying that you can't fall in love without some form of encouragement."
I sniffle quietly, trying to calm myself down a bit.
"He sounded so sure of himself when he said that whoever Mia loved, had to have kissed her or something. I get it though. He didn't know that he was talking about himself."
I absentmindedly fiddle with my fingers in my lap as I speak to my deceased mother. Some people consider it strange to talk to spirits, but I think of it as staying connected to those we love.
"Then again, Mia's a beautiful girl... Maybe Grayson had flirted with her without even knowing. It could just be his old player habits shining through. He could have hit on her and not remember at all."
I let out a shaky breath.
"Or maybe he knew exactly what he was doing. And he just finally realized he wanted something more than me."
The wind blows again, stronger this time. I smile slightly, remaining quiet.
"Skylar?" A voice asks behind me.
I turn to look at the source of the noise.
"Carter... Hey. How much of that did you hear?"
"All of it. I got here after you said 'everything's a mess.'" He says sheepishly.
I sigh and pat the space next to me on the ground. He complies to my silent request and sits down without a word.
We remain quiet for a while, just staring at the view before us. Though eventually, Carter breaks the silence.
"You know that's not true, right? That last thing you said before I came? It's not true."
I run my hand over my face and through my hair. Letting out a short groan, I flop onto my back with my feet dangling off the edge.
"How do you know that?" I ask softly. "He seemed pretty confident while saying all that stuff. And like I said, maybe he didn't even mean to flirt with her. He could have just seen a pretty girl, and his old player ways kicked in on autopilot."
Carter sighs quietly before turning to me. He brings his feet up from the cliff and crosses them under his legs, facing the side of my body.
"Do you honestly believe that?"
