Skylar's P.O.V.
I sit nervously on the kitchen counter top, twirling my thumbs around as my hands- which are now clammy and gross- rest firmly in my lap.
The others are in the living room with Grayson, who had legitimately fainted when he saw me.
With an ego that is practically nonexistent, this isn't a big confidence booster.
I drop my head into my hands and groan as the scene replays in my head over and over again, as though I were watching a comical gif.
And it would have been funny, too. But, I had quite possibly killed my boyfriend in the process, which is frowned upon in my country.
And most others, I'd hope.
I lift my head just in time to see the kitchen door swing open, allowing a suit-clad Axel to slip inside before strolling over to me.
"Gray's fine." He informs.
"Is he awake?"
He shakes his head. "Nah, not yet. It's a good thing that we still have an hour until prom."
"If he still wants to go with me." I mutter under my breath. "I just killed my boyfriend."
"He's not dead." Axel argues.
I sigh, running a hand through my hair for the thousandth time since I stepped foot in this kitchen.
"He was so fucking nervous." He starts. He strolls over to grab two cans of Mountain Dew from the fridge before returning to me and placing one in my waiting hand. "I'm surprised he lasted that long without fainting."
He hoists himself up to sit next to me on the counter and smiles boyishly in my direction.
"He was holding his breath before Spence even came down. So, when he saw his beautiful girlfriend all dolled up just for him, that was it."
I scoff. "Right, or maybe he panicked when he realized that he had agreed to bring the nerd to prom."
"Are you seriously still on that?" He asks, sounding annoyed. "It's been nearly a year, Skylar. You aren't the school's nerd and he isn't the school's bad boy. You guys are just two teenagers in love. Grayson doesn't care who you were, he loves who you are now, and will always love whoever you choose to be from here on out."
I look down to my lap guiltily. "I know."
"Do you?" He fires back. "Because it doesn't sound like it."
I sigh. "He fainted."
"Yes, he did." Axel confirms. "Because his girlfriend looked too damn sexy for him to stay on his feet any longer."
I shoot him a look, earning a chuckle from him in response.
"Okay, fine. I'll dial it down a bit. Frankly, I don't think he even saw you before he went down. I was right next to him and only saw your feet."
I raise my eyebrows slightly at the new information. "Then, why did he faint?"
Axel shrugs and hops down from the counter, his father's shoes clicking against the floor as he lands against the hard wood floors. He turns to me with a quirky smile, which is already lifting my spirits all on its own.
"Like I said before, he was holding his breath for quite a while. Last I checked, he was still human and still needed oxygen."
My lips twitch upward into a tiny smile as I feel a small bit of my worries drift away.
"Okay." Is my simple reply.
"Now, stop worrying about your lazy boyfriend who decided to take a nap at the worst time. Be happy that you were ready earlier than planned. Prom doesn't start for another hour."
