Amelie's POV

Sitting in math wasn't the best thing in the world, but sitting in a math class after school was the worst thing ever. I could be at home doing nothing, but no. I had to bring my grades up to make sure mom didn't kill me. I was already in deep shit with her, so I needed to start digging myself out of it. I sat by myself in the middle of the classroom near the windows. I could see others running around and leaving school. It sucked.

"Amelie, what is it that you're exactly having trouble with?" Mrs. Robins asked.

"I don't understand the things we were doing in class yesterday..." I frowned. She nodded and started going over the process again with me, but slowly. I was starting to get it and I was happy. After twenty minutes, I understood where we were at and knew that I just needed to pay a bit more attention and was allowed to come by whenever I needed help with math. I walked to my locker and put my books back in the pocket I had put in there.

"Hey Amelie." I looked over and saw one of the kids from my English class. I didn't know his name, but he was quiet... Like really quiet. I watched him push up his glasses and he looked nervous...

"Hey..." I said quietly.

"Um... My name is David... I was wondering... Um... If you wanted to go on a date." He stuttered. I didn't know what to say... "You don't have to... You're like the prettiest girl in the sixth grade... Well to me..." He laughed nervously. "Um, but if it makes it any better we could go to the ice cream place in Brooklyn.. The one that has those giant bowls..." He shrugged.

"I've never been there..." I thought about it, Scarlett had gone with mom once on a work trip. But I was too young to go.

"It's really good! They have these bowls that are designed like Yetis and the ice cream is really creamy. And it melts in your mouth but in a good way." He smiled.

"Really? That sounds good... I'll ask my mom." I smiled at him and saw him laugh.

"Cool! Here's my number. Just text me if she says yes. And I will pay for it. So don't worry about it." He said while writing his number on a post it from his backpack. I smiled and walked out to meet mom before she flipped out. I walked out to the front of the school and saw mom standing with a few other parents talking with them. I hated when she talked with parents... It always embarrassed me...

"Hey mom." I sighed.

"Amelie! Oh my gosh! She looks so much like her father!" One of the parents smiled at me.

"Her skin is so much darker than yours. She's going to grow up to be a tan one." Another laughed.

"She's nothing like Scarlett." One of the moms said quietly.

"Of course she isn't anything like Scarlett." Mom glared. "She's Amelie." She said while putting an arm around me. "Let's get going so we can get dinner started for us alright?" She smiled at me. I nodded and hugged my binder close to my chest. Why were those parents so rude? We got into the car and headed back home. I wasn't so enthused to talk about my possible date, but I wanted to get her permission right away... "Something bothering you?" Mom asked.

"Um... Kind of..." I shrugged. "But don't worry about it. It's nothing." I said while looking out the window.

"Alright..." She mumbled.
