Day and Night

Chapter 23

Jesse lays in her bed, unable to sleep. Soon, when the silence becomes unbearable, she stands up and walks to Lukas' room. She knocks three times.

Knock.
Knock.
Knock.

Lukas sits up and yawns. "Mom, go back to bed." He yawns. Jesse looks down. "I...I'm not your mom..." The girl sighs and the door opens. "Oh Hey... Are you doing okay?" The blonde asks while pulling her into his bedroom. They sit down at the edge of his bed and Lukas puts his hands on her pale cheeks. "Tell me whats wrong." Jesse closes her green eyes. "I had a nig... I heard something in my head... My mo... Luna. It was a terrible terrible scream... Lukas, something is wrong with her... I think the war, it's gonna start... I... I..." Jesse looks down at her feet and Lukas hugs her tightly. To Lukas' shock, Jesse starts to cry. He holds her close. "Shh... It's okay Jesse. I'm here and I'll never stop being here for you..." Jesse whimpers and Lukas holds her close. "Jesse, look at me." She slowly looks up. "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I don't plan on losing you ever again... I will do whatever it takes to protect you... I promise." He smiles sweetly and wipes her tears. "Do you wanna try and get some more sleep, or do you want to... Y'know... do something else?" Jesse nods to the second choice. She couldn't go back to sleep. Not yet.

After a full night of stargazing and little to no sleep, Jesse sits on the roof with Lukas. They watch the sun rise together while Lukas makes it rise. Jesse laughs to herself. "What?" Lukas looks at her. "I was just thinking... Almost four years ago, we met here for the very first time. You thought I was maya, then I road away on my night terror." They both look at the sun then Jesse lays her head on the blondes shoulder. "Lukas?" Jesse watches the beautiful sky. "Hmm?" He wraps her arm around her. "Is this my fault? The war and everything..." Lukas looks at her. "No." They stay in silence for a few moments then Jesse gets up.
"Where are you going?" Lukas asks.
"I figured... I kinda wanna go around town again--" Jesse says and Lukas smiles.
"I can go with you." He grins.
"Alone."

When the sun is up and it is about 12:30, Jesse walks around town. The golden swirls on her overalls glow in the sun, which only makes her stand out more. People look at her and start whispering to one another. "Why is there is night in our kingdom?" "What are the royals doing about it?" "Maybe if we ignore her, She'll go away." Jesse sighs and looks at the ground. 'I don't belong at the night kingdom... I don't belong here... Where do I belong?' A little kid walks up to the girl and Lukas watches from a distance with his friends. They all are quiet and watching her. The little kid smiles at her. "Hi there! My name is--" The kid gets cut off. "JAMES PRESCOTT! Get away from her." A woman pulls on the little boys arm and the kid looks at Jesse. "But mom! I wanna know who she is...!" The kid looks at Jesse then more people start to whisper. "#1 mom! That night could hurt our kids!" "We should do something about her." "Stupid nights." Jesse looks down and rubs her arm. 'I don't belong anywhere.' Tears start to burn Jesse's eyes. She looks down at the ground. "Go talk to her lover boy." Maya whispers to Lukas. He rolls his eyes and walks to Jesse.

When Lukas grabs her hand, Jesse looks up. "L-Lukas." She hugs him tightly and he blushes a little. He puts his hands on her shoulders. "Ignore those people, okay?" He says and Jesse hesitantly nods. "C-Can we go somewhere...? I don't wanna be around these people right now." She gulps then Lukas goes up to her ear. "I have the perfect place." He says softly. His breathe makes Jesse shiver a little then he pulls away and grins. "I'll race ya." He says and Jesse smiles. "Your on." They both start sprint as fast as they can, following a stone path to their destination.
