Mason had gone ahead to the country house, telling Angelica and Elijah that he needed to meditate to prepare himself for the ritual that would restore Elijah to the psychic link hierarchy but would not restore the lifeline link itself. Mason prepared the altar and carefully carved the ancient runes into its stone surface, and into eight stepping stones he'd recovered from one of his many digs. He incanted over the items until they glowed briefly, indicating they had now been spelled and were ready for the ceremony. He measured out the stepping stones and placed seven of them each seven feet away from the altar and seven feet apart from each other, forming a semi-circle around the bottom half of the altar, and he placed the eighth at the head of the altar. These had been the easy part of the spell to create and obtain but it was the potion that would contain the rarest ingredients. This ceremony would have to be perfect because Mason was not going to get a second opportunity for at least several hundred more years. Mason practiced the incantations and the order of ingredients over and over until he had it perfect.
Mason then walked the woods a mile radius out from the altar, placing small stones that he would activate to create a perimeter around the altar, allowing no one to enter or leave while the ceremony was in progress. The country house would be within the boundaries of the perimeter spell. He activated the perimeter spell to give him the privacy he needed to prepare the next phase of his spell. He walked to his car parked nearby and opened the trunk. Mason paused as he looked inside at his seven-year-old son, Jeremy, who was unconscious and bound. Mason lifted the boy out of the trunk and walked to the altar. He placed him on the altar and began to incant over the boy's unconscious body. He anointed his forehead and his chest with oil and picked up his ceremonial knife, slitting the boy's throat.
As his blood spilled over the altar the runes glowed again as the blood was absorbed into the stones. Mason collected a large amount of blood in one of his bottles and put the cork in it. The last of his son's blood soaked into the altar and as Mason's incantations concluded, the runes lost their glow and became camouflaged amongst the altar stones. Mason removed the boy's heart and set it in a bowl. "I am sorry my boy but this is necessary. You have served a greater purpose than the mere extension of my life in another body. Your life was never going to be your own."
Mason wrapped the boy's body and carried it a distance away to where Mason had set up camp to prepare his spells. He placed the body over a funeral pyre he had already erected and lit it on fire. The fire burned very hot, aided by accelerant that Mason used for his spell, causing the body to turn into ash much quicker than normal. Mason collected the ash into another jar and set it next to the jar of blood and the bowl with the heart. He laid out the rest of his tools and ingredients on the table then triple checked his inventory to ensure he had everything. Now all he needed was Elijah, Angelica and The Seven.
The three SUVs arrived on the eve of the Autumnal Equinox, as planned. Mason was still in the woods but had left instructions for them to wait for him at the house as he would come once he was ready to retrieve them to perform the ceremony. To prepare for the spell, Mason had told Angelica and Elijah that they must fast for 24 hours prior to the spell, which meant no blood, no food, nothing consumed after midnight, and no intimacy with each other either so they slept apart to ensure they did not succumb to temptation.
Mason did not meet them until 10 PM. Angelica was pacing nervously back and forth, which made The Seven restless and anxious, and all that nervous energy was annoying Elijah even though he was trying desperately not to show it. He was hungry and so was she but Elijah wanted nothing more than to make Angelica happy, that she was giving him the greatest gift anyone had ever given him, and he was not going to do or say anything to spoil the evening for her...but a bourbon sure would have been nice about now, he thought. Any ritual he'd participated in with a witch seemed to be painful so he was certain that a Warlock spell would probably be more of the same.
