Kol was a witch before he was turned into an Original vampire and missed witchcraft immensely. As a result, he would often be found in the company of witches and it took him no time yet again to find a witch that would accept his presence in exchange for spells and dark objects, and for whatever mischief he could conjure up. It was this weakness that a witch named Fernando used to exploit Kol's weakness in 1702.
Kol and Fernando met at the public house and they struck an alliance. Kol would provide Fernando with spells and showed him how to create dark objects and in exchange, Fernando would cast whatever spells Kol wanted, and onto whomever Kol wanted. Kol was still angry with Niklaus and Elijah for daggering him and wanted to hurt them for it and Angelica was the target. She was an outsider into their little family and Elijah's wife or not, Kol would use her to get back at all three of his siblings who obviously loved her more than they loved him.
Kol was so blinded by this that he did not realize how Fernando had begun to manipulate him, to control him, subtly planting ideas in Kol's head on exactly how that revenge should look. It resulted in the witch and the vampire hatching a plan that would give Kol the upper hand on his brothers, and make Angelica the unwitting pawn in the game.
But first, Kol would need Fernando's help in controlling his blood lust and Fernando was happy to oblige. The spells that he cast to help Kol control himself were, in reality, spells that helped Fernando gain control over Kol. Kol was completely unaware that he was merely a puppet for Fernando, who wanted Angelica separated from the Mikaelsons for different reasons altogether. Fernando also ensured that news of the massacres reached Mikael's ears and Mikael would indeed be coming to rid the world of his abominable children.
Fernando had forged a dark object for Kol to use on Angelica that would paralyze her and cloak her from Elijah's senses. They engineered the circumstances that caused Elijah and Niklaus to leave Angelica alone as they made final preparations to leave for the New World. Kol knew that both his brothers would come to dagger him and he had to work quickly. So as they left the house to find him he waited for Angelica to return, alone. When he did he attacked her, immobilized her with the dark object, and set the stage for her presumed death.
The plan was to hide Angelica with Fernando who would ensure she stayed cloaked from Elijah. But Kol being unpredictable deviated from the plan without telling Fernando and decided the old church mausoleum was the perfect hiding place for her instead. Who would think to look for her among all those coffins and decaying bodies? The dark object would keep her paralyzed and cloaked from Elijah, her sire. If his charade worked, Elijah would believe Angelica dead at the hands of Mikael. Kol had planned to tell him eventually that Angelica was not dead but Kol would have the advantage on Elijah and Niklaus by keeping her hidden so they would leave him alone.
Kol came upon the public house on his way back and decided to stop to quench his thirst. His blood lust was so great he had thought to satisfy himself just for a moment. Unfortunately for Kol his complete loss of control caused him to massacre all the occupants, at least 45 people at last count. And it was here where Elijah and Niklaus found him, daggered him and the secret of Angelica's whereabouts remained hidden for the next eighty years.
Kol began to pace in the study as Mason continued with his tale. It was Mason in the guise of Fernando who made the dark object that Kol used on Angelica. But Mason had not accounted for Kol's uncontrollable blood lust and his rebellious nature getting in the way of his plan. By the time Mason realized that the plan had gone awry it was too late. Kol was gone. The Mikaelsons were gone. His creation to save his brother and himself was nowhere to be found. Mason had made the dark object too well. It was designed to cloak Angelica from Elijah but it also cloaked Angelica from Mason. Mason searched extensively but could not locate Angelica.
The room erupted, Elijah was ready to kill Mason where he stood for his role in Angelica's death, albeit unintentional, and Elijah now knew that Mason had toyed with Kol and Angelica was ripped from Elijah because of Mason. Rafe and Albee struggled to hold Elijah back and it was not until Angelica stood up and took Elijah by the arm did he calm down.
"I need to hear everything, Elijah, please." He looked into her eyes, her face was stone as she took in Mason's betrayal and his role in the worst moments of her life. Elijah pulled away from Rafe and Albee and stood at the fireplace mantel, ready to rip it from the wall. He took a deep breath then turned toward Mason, and hissed through his teeth, "Continue."
But the sound of shattering glass startled everyone in the room. Kol had thrown a vase against the wall and paced even more feverishly. He was seething as he was reminded of the horror he had brought down upon Angelica and upon his family. It was 300 years ago but the guilt still weighed heavily upon him. And to make it worse, he had been manipulated by Mason into taking Angelica in the first place.
Kol yelled at Mason, and to his family, "How can you sit there and listen to anything else he has to say? He is no friend to this family. It is unforgivable what I did back then but you," pointing at Mason, "you have manipulated everything from the beginning. Would I have even done what I did if not for you?" Kol had tears running down his face. Rebekah tried to calm him but Kol was inconsolable.
But again it was Angelica who was the calming influence in the room, walking up to Kol and taking his face into her hands. She spoke softly to him, telling him it would be alright, wiping the tears from his cheeks. She embraced him and he held her, feeling unworthy of her forgiveness or her kindness. Everyone needed a break and a stiff drink since there was much more for Mason to tell, so they refilled glasses and retook their seats unsure if any of them wanted to hear any more from Mason or Fernando or Pedro or Remus, or whatever other name he had gone by these last 5000 years.
