Niklaus and Rebekah did not arrive in Madrid with the daggered and boxed Finn and Kol in tow until June of 1622. Elijah had lured Mikael away but they had to be certain they had evaded Mikael, and that was no easy task. They had been separated from Elijah for nine months now. They took over a suitable home and waited for Elijah to join them in Madrid, but Elijah did not come. Rebekah and Niklaus became concerned that Mikael may have succeeded in killing Elijah but they quickly dismissed that horrible notion. They wondered if he had set out to find them after they had not appeared for nine months. They decided it was best to stay where they were for now to see if Elijah would return.
Eventually, one of Elijah's compelled messengers found Niklaus in Madrid. Niklaus was intrigued and with a few additional well-placed inquiries about Montecito, he learned about the reviving dukedom and the mysterious estate manager who turned it around. Niklaus was not content to sit in Madrid while his brother played in Montecito, so he set off on the three day journey on horseback, leaving Rebekah in Madrid to protect Kol and Finn. A few compelled farmers later and Niklaus learned of the recent wedding between the Duke's daughter and the estate manager, an important piece of information conveniently left out of the compelled messages. Once Niklaus arrived in Montecito, he surveilled the estate to see what was going on before he made contact with Elijah.
It would not take long before Niklaus saw Elijah and Angelica leave the estate bound for one of the farms to check on the progress of the current crops or whatever it was estate managers did. Niklaus grinned as he watched the newlyweds mount their horses and ride off toward the farms. They would be gone for a while so Niklaus decided to approach the estate.
Niklaus introduced himself as Elijah's brother, and explained that he was looking for him. Niklaus was welcomed into the home by the old Duke as Elijah had told him stories of his family, of Niklaus and Rebekah, leaving out their vampire natures, of course. Niklaus compelled the old Duke to tell him how Elijah came to be at his home. The old Duke told Niklaus all that he knew and Niklaus decided to wait for his brother to return to the estate. "Fell in love with the beautiful damsel in distress, I see," thought Niklaus.
Niklaus was surprised that he enjoyed sharing drinks and talking with the old Duke, he was quite a gregarious old man with a lifetime of stories to tell. Eventually, Elijah and Angelica returned to the estate. Niklaus heard the stable boy take their horses and Elijah and Angelica were talking and laughing as they came into the house. When he crossed the threshold, Elijah stopped cold in his tracks and grabbed Angelica by the arm, pulling her behind him. Niklaus walked out of the library into the foyer, stopping after a few steps, looked at Elijah, grinned and said, "Hello, Brother."
