Chapter 44

Angelica passed the fifth month mark in her pregnancy at their third safe house. It was a large country house in the middle of nowhere, not a neighbor to be found within 10 miles of the house, and it was surrounded by woods but had a 1000 yard clearing around the perimeter of the house for visibility. Plans to deal with Romulus were discussed, argued, debated, and set aside as agreement could not be reached on how best to implement the plan. Elijah hated that it was Angelica who had to wield the sword because he wanted nothing more than to keep her safe but that was impossible, and it was this conundrum that had Elijah and The Seven vexed on how to take down this enemy.

Angelica had become noticeably withdrawn for weeks and Elijah was worried at how preoccupied she seemed. Elijah would find her staring off into space and at times, her hands would be in the air as if she was painting some sort of unseen picture. Elijah knew she needed to stay busy, keeping her mind challenged, it was compulsive, and he assumed that the boredom of hiding was taking its toll on her. He convinced her to play a round of chess with him which in and of itself was an exercise in futility as there was no beating her at the game, but Elijah had hoped to challenge her a bit to take her mind off of things.

Angelica touched the pawn on the board to make the first move then paused, frozen as she fixated on the pawn she held between her fingertips. Elijah looked at her and was about to speak to get her attention but he held his tongue. He watched as she focused on the pawn and then on the game board. This went on for several minutes and Elijah knew her mind was working quickly on some problem, their problem. Elijah leaned back in his chair to watch his wife. Angelica suddenly slammed the pawn down, causing the chess pieces to jump on the board. She stood up, knocking over her chair, and left the room. Angelica went straight to Charlie's computer room with Elijah on her heels. Within moments, Rafe and Albee made a bee line to that room as well, entered and shut the door behind them. The five of them remained behind those secure doors for three hours and eventually emerged with a plan, Angelica's plan, to take down Roman Alexander and bring an end to this 5000 year old saga.

Elijah called the house together for a meeting but it was Angelica who spoke. She addressed Mason first. "Mason, for 400 years you have manipulated and lied to me, and because of your subterfuge four of my beloved are gone because you placed us at a tactical disadvantage and left us ill-prepared for Roman Alexander. You have drawn us all into a 5000 year old game of chess between you and your brother and I am here to tell you that the players have now been changed. You treated me, you treated all of us, as pawns in that game and hear me, Mason, I am no pawn, I am no longer your pawn, I am the fucking queen, and Roman will rue the day he crossed me and mine. No one hurts my family and lives, no one."

Mason stood fixed on Angelica, as her eyes flashed green he wondered for a moment whether she would turn him to ash right where he sat. But she continued, "You tell me now, right now, whether you have left out any detail, any information, from the story you told us. Because if I find out you have lied or omitted the truth, I will turn you to ash." Mason answered her, "Angelica, I promise you, I have told you everything." Elijah noticed that Mason looked visibly fearful of Angelica, and if Elijah had to be honest, in that moment she was truly terrifying. Kol and Rebekah stood silent, Angelica commanded the room. Angelica then said to the group, "Failing to act is not an option as that assures the death of our son. So we have no choice but to take action. It is time for us to embrace our destiny; a destiny that has worked for 5000 years to undo a great wrong by bringing us together at the right place and at the right time; .and we must trust in our destiny. We will be victorious because our unborn Dragon King has seven of the best warriors by his side and that can be no coincidence. Our son will take his place in this world, as a dragon, a living vampire, a warlock, and a first-born Mikaelson witch. We will fulfill our destiny so that the legacy of the Dragon King lives on as it should have done 5000 years ago. Now, here's what we are going to do."
