sean stares back at mia with his jaw dropped for what feels like ten minutes.
"can you close your mouth now? i feel like i've memorized every inch of your tonsils," she looks at sean in disgust.
"what did you say?" sean raises his eyebrows.
"i said close your mo-"
"no, before that,"
"can i please stay at your place? temporarily at least," she crosses her arms, no longer feeling guilty but annoyed at the fact that he still hasn't responded.
"you can't be serious! i just met you yesterday, and now you're asking to move in with me?" sean says in disbelief.
"it's only temporary," she rolls her eyes. "besides, don't act like we won't be living together within a few years time, mr. soulmate."
"what if i'm a total serial killer or something? or what if i have some insane foot fetish? huh, how about then?" he says with the same shocked look on his face.
"come on, lew, i doubt you're a serial killer. and for the foot fetish, uh, well, we'll see about that," she shrugs.
"don't you have anyone else that you can stay with like your parents or a friend?" sean crosses his fingers.
"well, my best friend lives in a dorm with a strict no visitors policy. as for my parents, they live in canada so-"
"perfect! then it's settled, you can stay with your parents!" he flashes a smile.
"you've got to be kidding me," she folds her arms. "i'm not moving to canada, and even if i wanted to, i still attend school here in new york."
"you could always fly back and forth...?" he responds in a high pitched voice.
she doesn't respond, and her expression practically screams "done".
sean lets out a long sigh and pauses. "alright, fine. let's go."
"finally! i knew you'd get around to it!" she chirps, eagerly trailing behind sean as he heads for the subway.
"if destiny were a person, she'd be a real slut because she always loves to fuck me over," sean says under his breath as he swipes his metrocard.
"you're a really grumpy for twenty year old, lew," mia points out.
"i wonder why that is?" he tilts his head.
the two aboard the train and sean purposefully stands while mia sits.
"why don't you sit down? the train is practically empty," mia furrows her eyebrows.
"i'm good here," sean says as he plugs his earphones it.
"suit yourself," mia chimes and begins to stare out to window. it was in the middle of october, and winter was just around the corner. the cold temperatures had arrived long before, but mia was waiting especially for the snow to come around.
on the other hand, sean's eyes are glued to his phone screen. he pulls up his text messages and starts to write to julian.
sean you'll never guess what just happened
julian you're falling for her already? great!! i knew you two would get along
sean no dimwit, you'll see when we get back
julian did you say "we"????
sean ignores julian's text message, leaving the news as a surprise.
the train halts at his stop, and sean exits only to freeze after walking a few feet. he turns swiftly to see mia still watching out the window. as he takes a step forward, the doors shut and the subway speeds away.
"oh fuck," he hits his forehead with his hands.
he pauses for a moment and his face lights up, "hey, maybe this isn't so bad.."
he starts to stride off but he feels guiltier with each step. mia didn't know the address nor did she have either julian or sean's phone number. even if she did, she still didn't have a place to sleep for the night.
sean sighs and turns back to the trains and boards the next one. he gets off at the last stop, hoping mia would be around there somewhere. he scans the subway station for a bit, looking through the crowd to find the short brunette who was clearly not dressed for the weather. for a girl who loved the winter time, it was odd that she decided to wear a tank top and have no jacket on hand.
sean sighs when he sees no sight of her and decides to go upstairs. the first thing he sees is mia sitting on the bench, shivering.
"camila!" he yells as he walks towards her.
she turns around relief washes over her face as she sees sean. the relief is quick to leave and is replaced by annoyance. "don't call me camila."
"you know now is not the time to be ms. snarky, camila. i could've let your ass wander off and get lost!"
"or maybe you could have called me when you got off at your stop!" she shoots back.
"alright, maybe that was my fault. sorry,' he patronizes.
"can we just take a cab? i don't really trust your ability to even tap my shoulder when we get to our stop,"
"ugh, fine," sean waves to one of the taxis parked by and the two enter the cab.
"where to?" the cab driver, a man that seems to be in his late seventies, turns to ask sean.
"avalon apartments," sean responds.
after buckling her seatbelt, mia turns her body to face sean. "you live there?! seventeen magazine listed your rooftop as one of the best places to watch the new york sunset!"
the cab driver buts into their conversation, "you two moving in together? i remember when my wife first moved into-"
"oh my god, no!" sean stops the cab driver from continuing his sentence. 'i just met this girl!"
"o-oh.. it's one of those - what do you kids call it nowadays? a one night stand?" the driver says.
"no!" sean says in disgust with his cheeks turning a bright red. "she's just my, uh.. nevermind."
after mia stops laughing at sean's embarrassment, she turns to him and asks, "do you have an extra toothbrush at your place?"
sean scrunches his face. "i don't understand why you can't just go to your apartment and pick up your things then come by tomorrow morning."
mia yawns before she responds. "i'm kind of tired, i'll just get my things tomorrow."
"i have no idea how we're supposed to be soulmates, we're literally polar opposites," sean rolls his eyes.
"you know what they say...opposites attract," mia winks, and within seconds she yawns once more and falls asleep.
