"did you say something?" sean looks at mia.
"huh?" her eyes widen, and she can feel her cheeks burning red. "no, it was nothing... nothing."
"you sure?" he pries, swearing to himself he heard her say something.
"it wasn't important, sean," she assures. "i promise."
"okay," he stops pestering and stands up, reaching out his hand to mia to help her up.
as she grabs his hand, his phone buzzes. with his grabs his phone with other hand and shifts his the text from julian. he swiftly types his message back and puts his phone away.
"who texted?" mia asks as they walk closer and closer to the subway station.
"julian," he replies. "he wants us to meet him at the starbucks on 4th street."
"oh alright," mia says. "did he say what for?"
he shakes his head.
they continue to walk in silence for a bit until they reach the busy coffee shop. as they push the door open, their eyes immediately find julian sitting in the corner, frantically biting his fingernails and staring blankly into the distance.
sean slowly creeps toward his best friend and waves his hand in front of him, receiving no response back.
"jules?" he snaps his fingers.
julian snaps out of his trance and looks up to mia and sean.
"you alright?" mia furrows her eyebrows.
"o-of course, why wouldn't i be?" he replies awkwardly.
"you seemed a lil...frantic?" sean answers.
"you know what? enough about me," julian stands and places one arm around sean and the other around mia, guiding them to the exit of the starbucks. "how are my two favorite people in the entire world doing?"
"okay, something is definitely up," sean lifts julian's arm off of himself and folds his arms. "you need something from us."
"w-what?" julian places his hand on his heart, acting hurt. "i think you know me better than that sea-"
"what do you want, jules?" sean cuts him off.
"alright fine," julian sighs, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "i kind of ask nat on a date, and i need you to be there to make sure i don't embarrass myself in front of her."
"you want me to third wheel you guys?" sean whines.
"actually..." julian says with a high pitched voice, looking at mia.
"you said it was a double date!" sean's jaw drops.
julian smiles awkwardly, "well, i mean technically, only you two are on the date...i only asked her to 'hang out' with me."
"jules!" mia snaps.
"come on, mia" julian pouts.
"i mean if mia is going to be there," sean's voice drifts off. "i guess it wouldn't be so bad."
mia looks at sean, shocked by his out of character response. before she can say anything, julian is already bringing them into for a group hug.
"thank you guys!" he yells, squeezing them even tighter. "it'll be at the carnival tonight, don't be late!"
"how would we be late, we live across the hall from each other!" sean yells to julian who's already to far to hear him.
"you know, i never agreed to this whole date thing," mia says jokingly.
"it can't be that bad," he shrugs.
"you're right, i mean we did just spend the last few days together in a different country. well, it was canada, but it still counts," she lets out a laugh. "besides, it's a fake 'date' anyways."
"who said it was fake?" sean replies, still looking straight at the sidewalk ahead of him.
"wel- i, uh, i just-" mia struggles to speak.
"i'll pick you up at seven," he winks and walks away from mia.
mia blinks a few times, still not believing what just happened. her cheeks flush, and she finds herself smiling. she then realizes that sean actually walked off, and she hurries to catch up, yelling, "what do you mean 'pick me up'?! we live together!"
-
"i still can't believe you asked her to 'hang out' instead of asking her on a date," sean teases julian, watching his best friend scavenge through his closet to find something to wear.
"we're taking it slow," julian defends. "and even then, it's going a lot faster than you and mia, and you two are actually soulmates!"
"hey!" sean sits up on jules' bed. "i'm going on a date with her tonight, aren't i?"
"yeah, but you couldn't even ask her on a date either! isn't that why you asked me to pretend like i needed you two to double date with me?"
"you gotta admit, it was a pretty smart plan," sean shrugs.
"sure," julian replies sarcastically.
"my acting skills were pretty good! she totally had no idea i planned this so we could go on a date," sean smiles proudly.
"you know what's an even better plan?"
"what?"
"being honest with mia and telling her that you have feelings for her," julian says. "which by the way, when did that happen? i'm all for it, but you kind of caught me off guard with the text about your whole plan earlier today."
"i don't know actually," sean pauses. "i did fly out to a different country to beg her to come back, which i'd literally never do for anyone - except maybe you. also, something happened in canada...something in my head just clicked..."
"aw sean," julian pretends to wipe a tear away from his face. "my best friend does have a heart!"
"whatever," sean rolls his eyes. he stands up and starts walking towards the door. "anyways, mia's probably done, so i should get ready. see you in a bit."
"sean's in looooove!" julian teases.
"shut up!" sean groans, shutting julian's door close.
