mia stares at the reflection before her. she grips the edge of the bathroom counter and looks down.
she's snapped back to reality as she hear's maddie knock on the door. "are you okay in there?"
mia shakes her head and twists the knob open.
"what's wrong?" maddie frown when she sees the look on mia's face.
"nothing," mia assures and walks past maddie to the living room.
mia grabs her purse, takes the red lipstick out, and starts to carefully apply it.
it's been three days since sean's panic attack, and he still hasn't returned from wherever he went. he didn't bother to call, text, or leave any kind of note to let mia know how long he would be gone - or that he'd be gone at all.
"i've known you for years mia," maddie takes a seat next to her on the couch. "i think i can tell when you're lying to me."
mia looks away from her compact mirror and into maddie's eyes. "you sure this is a good idea?"
"it's not the best idea," maddie admits. "but it's worth a shot right?"
"you're right," mia nods unsurely. "one date won't hurt."
"and if you ever feel bad about it, remember that this dude had the audacity to have a girlfriend when he knew he was going to meet you!" maddie rolls her eyes.
mia nods and takes a look at herself in the full length mirror in their living room. she adjusts her her black mini skirt, and stares at her reflection once more.
she's interrupted by her phone buzzing, and mia turns to maddie handing her phone to her.
"your uber is here," maddie says. "try your hardest to have fun tonight, alright? let loose," she smiles encouragingly.
mia nods slowly, and starts to walk to the door. she leaves the apartment and heads downstairs.
-
mia reluctantly pushes through the restaurant venue's doors. she scans the area but doesn't find the face she's looking for.
"reservation for san jose?" she says to the worker.
she looks through the list of names and shakes her head, "i can't seem to find that name here,"
"oh," mia says confusedly. "maybe i'm just early.. can i get a table for two then?"
the server nods and leads mia to a table.
"would you like to order now or wait for the other member of your party?" she asks.
"uh, i'll wait," mia glances at her watch. "he'll be here soon anyways."
the server nods and leaves mia to assist other customers.
mia plays with her hands and fidgets in her seat, not sure of what to do while waiting.
as the minutes pass, mia gets even antsier and questions whether or not going on a date was a good idea.
before her thoughts became even more of a mess a voice calls mia's attention. her head snaps up and she sees kenneth.
"hi, mia right?" he smiles and extends his hand to her. "sorry i'm late, you know the traffic here."
"it's all good, don't even worry about it!" mia assures.
"so what made you decide to call me up again?" he asks curiously. "i mean after you stood me up a couple of weeks ago..."
"listen, i'm so sorry about that, something came up-"
kenneth's eyes flicker to mia's wrist to see the zeroes aligned. "is that the reason why?" he points to her soulmate countdown.
mia sighs, "yeah, it was."
"well, i don't really understand," kenneth furrows his eyebrows. "you met your literal soulmate, why are you on a date with me?"
"let's just say that the universe made a mistake with this one," mia shrugs. "i totally get it if you don't want to stay, not that many would because of you know what," she points to her wrist.
kenneth opens his mouth to speak but pauses, then shakes his head.
"i've got a while 'til this thing hits zero," he shows her his countdown to reveal three years left. "i think whoever my future lucky lady is won't mind."
mia lets out a small laugh. "and my current lucky lad clearly doesn't."
"is he really that bad?" kenneth questions.
"bad enough for me to even be here right now," she replies.
"come on! you don't like anything about him at all? don't even find him attractive?"
-
two hours pass and the two find themselves inside the nightclub across the street from the restaurant they just shared dinner in.
ten drinks later, and the two are insanely wasted. the music starts to blast 'i think of you' by jeremih.
mia gets up from her stool and drags kenneth to the dancefloor. the two start dancing to the music, laughing at each other's terrible dance moves.
kenneth inches closer to mia, and wraps his hand around her waist, whispering, "why don't we go somewhere more private?"
mia's eyes meet his and she nods.
the two stumble over their own feet as the exit the club and enter ken's car.
he places his hand on mia's thigh, and she tenses up.
"why don't we have some fun?" he slurs, with the smell of vodka reaking from his breath.
"i'm not-" mia attempts to protest but kenneth goes closer to her, leaving small kisses on her neck.
"shh,"
"kenneth, i don't want to-"
kenneth's car door is abruptly opened to reveal a shadowy figure.
"get the fuck off her!" sean yells. he grabs kenneth's jacket and pulls him out of the car.
"what the hell?!" kenneth stands up and wipes his mouth. "who are you?!"
"i'm her soulmate, asshole!" sean shoves kenneth to the ground and runs to the other side of the car, opening the car door and grabbing mia.
"let's get out of here," he says quickly, and the two run as fast as they can until kenneth is no longer in sight.
as they slow down, and turn yet another corner in hopes that kenneth isn't following them anymore, sean stops to catch his breath.
mia stares at the ground and says quietly, "...thank you for saving me."
