new years eve

mia wakes up, and without hesitation she immediately grabs her phone to check for any messages from sean.

as with the last few weeks, there were none.

she lets out a long sigh, still having the same disappointment she had from the first day he left. none of the friends had heard from him, and they weren't quite sure if they ever would any time soon.

mia looks around the empty apartment, feeling guilty that she was even there. it wasn't hers in the first place - it was sean's. she couldn't bring herself to sleep in his bed either, despite how uncomfortable the living room couch was.

a knock on the door startles mia, and before she can get up to answer it, the door twists open.

"happy new years eve love," maddie says with a half-hearted smile as she goes in to hug her best friend. "how've you been holding up?"

"still the same," mia sighs again. "no calls or texts. i just want to know if he's okay."

"let's not stress about that for tonight, okay?" maddie rubs mia's shoulder, trying to cheer her up. "he's your soulmate, isn't he? you'll find your way back to each other eventually."

"i guess you're right," mia nods. "so, what do you have planned for us tonight?"

"we could watch the ball drop in times square," maddie suggests as she scrolls through her phone looking for things to do.

mia groans at the mere mention of it, complaining, "we could watch that from our windows."

"fine fine," maddie laughs. "i think one of julian's friends is having a party at the penthouse of some hotel."

"that'll do,"

-

it's 11:45 when mia, maddie, and julian walk reach the penthouse floor of the new year's eve party.

mia's phone buzzes, but as she goes to answer it, julian drags them over to the host of the party.

"gabe!" julian rushes over to his friend, bringing him into a hug. "how'd you manage to rent out the entire penthouse?"

"connection," he shrugs. "so, how've you been? i heard about the accident."

"oh yeah," julian rubs the back of his neck. "that was a couple of weeks ago, i'm alright now. a couple of broken bones but nothing too serious."
