sean sits in front of the bar counter while waiting for cass to arrive, rehearsing what he was about to say in his mind.

"change your mind?" a very familiar voice whispers into sean's ear from behind. he turns around to see cassandra and rolls his eyes.

"hi cass," he says with zero emotion.

"i'll have a magarita and he'll take a beer," cass says over to the bartender before turning back to sean. "so, care to explain to me what happened over there?"

"you know i can't drink anymore cass," he sighs.

"one beer won't hurt you," she replies. "and answer my question."

"she wasn't lying, that girl, mia, is my soulmate. i met her a couple days ago," he runs his hand through his hair.

"and now you're living together?" she crosses her arms.

"it's a long story, but that's not why i'm here," he confesses. "it's been a fun six months cass, but i think it's time we end this."

"excuse me? you think just because you met your soulmate that automatically means you can just throw me away just like that?!" she says loudly and everyone in the bar looks over to them.

"cass, don't cause a scene," he places his hand on her knee. "and to be honest, it's a perfectly valid reason to dump you."

"you're a dick," she grabs the margarita from the counter and spills it on all over sean's lap.

his jolts up and curses as cass walks away. he turns over to the rest of the people in the bar and yells, "show's over people!"

he sits back down on the stool and clenches his jaw. "i kind of deserve that," he says to himself.

he grabs his beer and chugs it all down with one swift motion. he waves his hand over to the bartender, "can i get three more?"

mia stares at the notebook before her, tearing the tenth paper out of the spiral and tossing it on the ground.

mia mendoza was never one to start a project early, and her film midterm was not an exception. after ten ideas that didn't seem just right for her video, she decided to take a break and check her phone. she looks over to see it's already two in the morning, and sean still hasn't returned from wherever the hell he was, not that it mattered to her.

she yawns and heads over to switch the lights off and walks over to the restroom for her night routine. in the middle of brushing her teeth, she hears footsteps. she quietly turns off the faucet and tiptoes outside, whispering, "sean? please tell me that's you.."

"m-miaaaa," he stumbles over the coffee table. "how ya been?"

mia turns back to the restroom to spit out the toothpaste and walks over to sean. "are you drunk?"

"my name's sean, silly, not drunk!" he giggles.

"you are definitely wasted," she rolls her eyes. "well, i've got class at eight, so just keep it down, alright?"

"no, mia!" he pulls her arm as she was about to walk away. "let's do something fun!"

"ew!" she swats his hand away.

"not like that...unless you're into that?" he smirks.

"no, i am not into that," she crosses her arms. "at least not with you."

"come on," he tugs her arm again. "let's go to the rooftop. i know you've been dying to see that view."

mia looks back at the clock then over to sean. she sighs, "okay, alright, but only for a little bit."

sean's face lights up and starts skipping over to the door, mia trailing behind him. she locks the door and follows him up the stairs.

sean pushes the door open and reveals the rooftop with tables scattered around. mia rushes over to the railing's edge and looks up at the sky, her face in complete awe.

"this is amazing," she says to herself.

"i know," he pops up from behind her. he walks over next to her and leans his hands on the railing. "to be honest, i've never been up here until now."

"what?" mia turns to sean in shock. "haven't you lived here two years?"

sean laughs and nods. "i just never thought about it...or maybe just never had anyone to bring."

mia hits sean's shoulder, "gross,"

he laughs again, "i'm just joking! you're not that special." he rolls his eyes.

"not that special huh? being your soulmate is not that special?"

he shrugs.

"i never understood why some people are so against the countdown," she says. "i think it's romantic. isn't exciting to know that there's someone out there for you? someone the universe specifically crafted to love you?"

"the countdown is complete bullshit," he replies. "and so is love. maybe it's nice for a moment, but in the end all love does is get you hurt."

"well how do you know that? have you ever been in love?"

"not in love, but i loved someone,"

"what happened?"

sean opens his mouth to speak but instead he ends up throwing up over the edge of the rooftop. seconds later, he passes out onto the floor.

"oh god, sean," she groans. she walks over to his body and uses the collar of his shirt to wipe his mouth. she begins to lift him up, struggling while doing so.

-

after the journey that was dragging sean down the stairs to their apartment, mia places sean on his bed. she sits at the edge and looks at him, wondering why he became so cold.

"i like the drunk you," she whispers. "you're less of an asshole when you're drunk. still an ass, but not as much."

she reaches over to his bedside table and switches off the lamp. she stands but sean pulls her arm.

"don't leave," he slurs. "don't leave me again, i don't want to be alone. you know how i get when i'm by myself. please..."

"what are you talking about?" mia turns around to see sean's eyes still shut, meaning he was dreaming.

"don't leave me, please, m-" he stops talking and lets go of mia.
