sean is awaken by the loud knocking on the front door of his apartment. he groans and rubs his eyes, looking at the clock to see it's only six in the morning.
he closes his eyes again, hoping that whoever it was would eventually get the hint and leave him alone.
but it doesn't. the knocking only increases and gets louder with each and every time the person's fist makes contact with the door.
he foolishly covers his face with a pillow in attempts to block out the noise, but it's no use.
he rolls out of bed and trudges over to the door, not caring that he didn't even have a shirt on.
with a twist of a knob, the door shoots open and sean stumbles back. he rubs his eyes again and looks at the blonde in front of him.
"who are you?" he scrunches his face.
"maddie, maddie ziegler. mia's best friend," she says quickly. "anyways, you need to fix what you did."
"wait, what?" sean tilts his head in confusion as he watches maddie walk further into his apartment and plop herself on the couch.
"you need to fix what you did with mia!"
sean walks over to her and scratches the back of his neck, "i don't understand, what happened?"
"well, if you must ask," she says annoyedly. "mia went back to canada!"
"what is she doing in canada?!"
"after all that shit you told her last night, she obviously decided that she didn't want to ever see your face again," maddie explains. "and i guess she had nowhere else to go but there."
"okay, well what does this have to do with me?" he stares blankly at maddie.
maddie stands up and points her finger to sean's face. "you need to go back here and fix this! bring mia back!"
"you mean go to canada?" he emphasizes. "yeah, right. not a chance."
"mia was right, you are a prick," maddie mumbles to herself. "but you have to go back there, mia will lose her scholarship if she doesn't come back."
sean runs his hands through his hair and paces back and forth.
"and how do you suppose i get to canada? i don't even know where she lives!"
"she lives in toronto," maddie responds. "and i don't know, you could fly or drive or take the train - something!"
"fine," sean mutters.
"finally!" maddie sighs in relief.
-
sean closes the zipper of his backpack after stuffing whatever clothes he could find lying around, then leaves his apartment with plane ticket in hand.
he walks over to julian's apartment and finds the door unlocked.
"jules?" he calls out into the apartment.
"in here!" julian's voice says from his bedroom.
sean walks in and julian immediately notices sean's bag and ticket.
"what's that?" julian stands and points to the ticket. "where are you going?
"canada,"
"what? why?"
"camila went back to canada, so now i have to go try and get her back here," sean says bluntly.
julian scratches his wrist and says, "you sure she wants to see your face now? i mean if she had to go all the way to canada, whatever you said must have been real fucke-"
"thanks for the encouragement," sean cuts jules off. "and i didn't come here to ask for your opinion, i just came to let you know i was leaving."
sean turns around and as he's walking away he hears julian mutter, "you didn't do that when you left last week."
"don't act like you don't know where i went," sean says coldly as he continues walking to exit the apartment.
-
after the hassle of airport security and what feels like years of waiting for his flight number to be called, sean boards the plane.
to much of his annoyance, his seat is located at the very end of the plane, which was expected considering how last minute his decision was.
he sits down and reviews the address maddie gave him a few hours ago.
"what am i doing?" he says quietly to himself.
the flight attendants start to demonstrate the safety procedures and sean tunes them out by putting in his earphones. he closes his eyes and hopes that the time will pass quicker than usual.
-
sean parks his rental car in front of the address maddie gave him. he stares at the house for a moment, wondering whether or not it was a good idea to be there.
he could just drive away and let her have a better life without him, without all the drama that entailed when she was around him.
but for some reason, he wanted to go in there and make everything right. he wanted to change himself, not just for mia, but for himself.
he didn't want to feel like a waste of space anymore.
he opens the car door and starts walking over to the front porch. he brings his hand up to the doorbell. despite his hesitation, he presses the button and holds his breath.
it's silent for a moment, and all he can hear is the sound of the crickets chirping and the wind bristling the leaves of the trees.
then he hears the faint footsteps grow louder and closer towards the door.
it opens and out comes a mia staring at sean in disbelief.
"what are you doing here?" she asks, taking a step outside and cautiously closing the door behind her.
"i came to say i'm sorry," he starts. "and i want you to come back."
"come back?" she crosses her arms. "you've got to be kidding me! after all that happened, there's no way i'm going back with you."
she turns back to the door and starts to twist the knob when sean pulls her other hand.
"wait!" he says. "i'll tell you everything."
she turns around, and sean releases his grip on her arm. "what do you mean?"
"everything," he repeats. "why i'm like this, why i'm such an asshole to you, why i drink so much... everything."
