julian watches sean's expression falter, as if he could physically see his heart drop.
"t-that's not possible right?" sean croaks. "you gotta be joking, right? please tell me you're joking, jules?" he pleads, looking for a glimmer of hope in julian's face.
sean's eyes flicker down to julian's wrist that flashes 00:00:00. he presses his lips into a line, and he balls his fists.
"i don't understand," sean mutters. his expression then changes from a downhearted one to anger. "i'm going to kill whoever the fuck ran you over, it's their fault that this happened."
sean starts to pace across the room, breathing heavily.
"it's okay sean," julian looks up to sean.
"no it's not!" he yells.
"sean!" julian raises his voice, but he ends up coughing up again. "it's okay, sean. i know how much mia means to you. i'm not going to interfere."
"but do you know how much you mean to me?" sean looks at julian with bloodshot eyes. "you were the only person i had when my mom died. you were there even before mia."
"she's your soulmate," julian exasperates.
"no, she's..." sean pauses, looking at the ground.
sean lifts the sleeve of his shirt and stares at his wrists. he watches the numbers move rapidly until they stop at two years.
"...she's yours."
sean sits down on the chair near the door and buries his face into his hands and takes deep breaths.
"i don't care what the soulmate countdown says," julian sighs. "i can live without one."
"you waited your whole life for this!" sean bursts out, standing up and looks straight into julian's eyes. "you're the one who was so full of this soulmate bullshit! i'm not letting you give that up for me."
"sean," julian starts.
"i didn't even want to meet mia in the first place," sean lies. "i have two years left. i'll be fine."
"but you love mia,"
"but that doesn't matter anymore," sean replies harshly. he starts gathering his things and takes one last look at julian. "i forgot about i had something to do, i'm gonna get going."
sean pushes past the nurses and doctors in his way, quietly muttering sorry even though he knew he didn't mean it. the only person he felt sorry for was himself.
he pushes the hospital exit doors and steps outside, looking all around him. he knew he didn't want to go home because he'd see mia, and he definitely wasn't ready for that. he sees a 7/11 store across the street, and he doesn't think twice before walking over there.
