"i don't know if i can, mia," sean whines, sinking himself into the couch of the abnormally quiet starbucks.

"if you never try you never know," mia shrugs. "you said you wanted to get better, this is a step towards that."

"one alcoholics anonymous meeting won't cure me," he rolls his eyes, taking a sip of his coffee.

"obviously one won't fix your problem," mia emphasizes. "but if you keep it up, it could. give me one reason why you don't want to go."

"i don't want to be stuck in a room full of random strangers for an hour talking about how much i love drinking," he stands up and starts walking to the exit, mia trailing behind him.

"it can't be that bad!" she says as she catches up to sean.

"don't you think i'll be the odd one out?" he raises his eyebrow. "a good looking 22 year old guy like me surrounded by a bunch of parents going through a midlife crisis!"

"god, you can't be serious," mia shakes her head. "if you want, i can go with you."

sean stops walking and turns to face mia. "wait, really? you'd do that for me?"

"of course," she says softly.

"why?"

"because..." she hesitates, looking at the ground. "...i care about you, and i want you to get better."

"oh," he says, stunned by her response.

"is it that weird for someone to care about you?"

sean rubs the back of his neck, staring at the ground. "it's just, i- uh, haven't heard anyone say that in a while."

"oh,"

mia grabs sean's hand and intertwines it with hers, catching him by surprise for the second time within five minutes.

"it can't be that bad, i promise. and if for whatever reason you think it's the worst thing in the entire world, then i won't talk about it ever again. we'll find something else to help you," she assures him. "i'll be right next to you the entire time, alright?"

sean takes a deep breath, hating the fact that she was right. he sighs, "alright."

a minute passes, and sean is still staring at the door knob of the aa meeting's building. he practically looks frozen in place.
