a year and four months later
sean blinks a couple of times, unsure if his eyes were deceiving him.
"am i really seeing this right now?" he says in disbelief, rubbing his eyes. "i-is this real?"
he stands up and points at the television and groans in annoyance, "how does he not know what the capital of spain is?!"
he rolls his eyes and marches over to the table in the middle of the hospital waiting room to grab the remote. he fumbles around with it trying to change the channel from that embarrassing episode of who wants to be a millionaire to something slightly more bearable.
"what are you looking at?" he squints at the little boy who had been watching sean's mini meltdown over the gameshow.
"sean?" a man's voice calls from the end of the room, and he looks up to see his doctor.
"oh hey doc walters!" he stands up and straightens himself out, awkwardly trying to play it cool. "time flies doesn't it? this is my last monthly visit already?"
"that's correct," the doctor says as he opens the door to his office. "how have the last five months treated you?"
"well in comparison to when i first woke up from my coma with no family or visitors waiting for me, i'd say much better," he says sarcastically.
"i'm sorry about that sean," dr. walters places his hand on sean's shoulder. "your friends practically lived here before then, but when the time since you fell into that coma started inching past a year, i guess they lost hope."
"that's some excuse," sean mumbles to himself while the doctor listens to his heartbeat and continues with the checkup.
"anyways, keeping up with the no alcohol lifestyle, right?"
sean flashes a smile proudly, "five months sober. or should i say two years sober?" he winks.
"you weren't awake for the rest of it so it doesn't count," dr. walters deadpans. "okay, you're all set."
"really?"
the doctor nods. "so, what's the plan now? did you finally get a job?"
"okay, ouch," sean pretends to be offended. "and no, i'm actually sort of headed back to new york tomorrow."
"new york, huh? going back to your old life?"
"ha, not quite," sean lets out a laugh. "i'm got an internship under this huge film company, and my first day is later this week."
