"I can't believe it." Thomas said at breakfast the next morning. "According to the general, that's the first time a prisoner has escaped."
"Yeah." I agreed, stabbing a bite of scrambled eggs with my fork. I tried to be casual, despite the fact that Virgil's escape was the only thing people seemed to be talking about this morning, and I had to act like I knew just as much about it as they did. "It's crazy."
"And to think that it was the villain that you captured!" Thomas said. "Man, that must be rough on your end. Your very first second level assignment, and the very same day you complete it, the prisoner escapes."
"Yeah, well, as long as I completed the assignment, right?" I said.
Thomas nodded. "I guess."
"So, uh, did you see the latest Steven Universe episode?" I asked, desperate for a new topic.
"Yeah, I did. It was pretty big." He said. "This whole thing recently... it's crazy."
To my relief, we were able to talk about Steven Universe, and not last night's events.

After breakfast, I was called to the general's office for the second time this week. I had no idea what for.
Relax, Roman. He probably wants to assign you another second level assignment. He doesn't know it was you who released Virgil. He can't punish you for it if he doesn't know you did it.
I took a deep breath before I stepped inside. That seems to be something that I've done a lot lately. I guess I'm just really anxious about opening doors.
The general met my eyes, and he did not look happy.
Oh, shitshitshitshitshitshit, he knows, he knows, he knows, he knows, he knows...
I forced myself to remain a calm exterior.
This is just a misunderstanding. He probably found out about the mess I made in the kitchen yesterday and he's upset about that.
"Sir? You asked to see me?" I said.
"Yes. Sit down, Roman." The general said. He pulled around his computer screen and showed me. It was playing a security camera footage, footage from last night. "Would you care to explain why you freed the prisoner last night?"
I forced myself to keep calm.
"How do you know it's me and not a look alike?" I asked. "I mean, Thomas looks a lot like me. I mean, a lot. Have you seen how similar we look? It's crazy. If my life were a movie, the same actor could play both me and Thomas. I mean... I'm not saying that Thomas did it. He didn't do it. He wouldn't. I'm merely saying that we look a lot alike."
The general stared at me, clearly unamused by my rambling. "Your friend Thomas may look similar to you, but he's not identical to you. This was most certainly you."
"You know, it's sorta creepy how your security cameras are always watching." I said. "Isn't that a little creepy?"
"Roman, this is no joking matter. You realize that you deliberately betrayed the heroes." The general said. "This act cannot go unpunished. Believe me when I say you will be punished most severely."
