Chapter 10 – Kayla’s POV.
Friday has arrived! Most people would be extremely happily considering that the weekend is in our grasp, but not me. Why?
One, I still have a detention to serve today, my last one to be precise. Thank the lord for that, I don’t think I could endure another horrific day stuck in those 4 walls with a bunch of creeps. I’m weird, but not a creep. There’s a difference.
Two, Karen’s requested me to visit her in the kitchen as soon as I can, apparently it was something serious and important.
The latter is the reason I’m not happy. Why does she want to speak to me? Have I done something wrong? I don’t think I have, I’ve been quite behaved, not messing around, always doing homework, looking for jobs. Then why?
What if she thinks I’ve overstayed my welcome and is kicking me out?
I hyperventilate at that thought and my eyes widened. I hope that isn’t the case! Where are me and Cole supposed to go? He’s only 16 for goodness sakes!
Without realising it, my feet led me to the kitchen, where Karen was waiting for me with a warm smile. She wouldn’t kick me out with that smile would she?
“Hi-hi, Karen, what did you need? You’re not kicking me out are you? I mean I’m only 18 so you can kick me out but what about Cole? He’s only 16, where is he supposed to go? Please don’t kick us out, I’ll do chores, I’ll always listen, I’ll never defy you but please don’t kick me out of the house. There might be aliens out there waiting to abduct me and I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die Karen! Only you can save me! I’m too young to die!” I rambled and fell onto the kitchen floor, hearing sniggers from the side of me. I noticed it was Kian and scowled.
“Are you done honey?” Karen bit her lip, holding back her laughter.
“So, so you’re still going to kick me out, please don’t, I-“ She placed her hand over my mouth, cutting me off before I go into another rambling session.
“Are you going to talk if I let go of you?” She asked. I shook my head no. She let go of me.
“No I am not going to kick you out, why on earth would you think that?” I was about to interrupt but the look she gave me made me zip my mouth shut.
“I’m here to offer you a job” She grinned.
Open.
Close.
Open.
Close.
That was how my mouth was reacting, opening and closing like a fish. I didn’t know what to think, a job?
“A job?” I repeated.
“Mum, I told you to let me tell her!” Kian whined, stomping his foot and acting like a stubborn child.
Karen ignored him and continued, “Yes Kayla, a job. I’ve heard you’re gifted in the art of photography. My photographer quit on us and I spoke to my team, they were a bit sceptical about letting a teenager be our photographer, but I know you’ll do well. So what do you say?” She smiled warmly, holding my hands.
Only one thing out of that speech stood out.
“How do you know I’m good at photography?” I raised an eyebrow.
“I saw a purple folder with images of you and other spectacular stuff inside it”
I was shocked. How did she see that folder? That folder has been hidden for as long as I’ve had it, not even Cole knows about it, so how did she see it? Kian must’ve noticed the confused expression that was on my face.
