I thought that after we escaped the maze, it would all be over.

That one faithful day when suddenly soldiers came rushing in while we were thinking about a new plan to escape this hell hole. They saved us from that place, but in the end I was wondering if we were actually better off?

Was living in the scorch so much better then what we had back in the maze? Yes we lived in uncertainty and we never knew which one of us was next to die by a Griever stung. Not to forget the suicides of the girls who couldn't take it anymore. We had lost many in the three years I had been stuck in there. But the scorch was worse, people changed into horrible creatures that wanted to bite your face off. I never thought I would say this, but I wished I was back in the maze.

Our leader and I were the first who entered the maze, the first ones who had to experience that horrible place.

I looked around, we were hiding from the sandstorm in an old abandoned building- we kept watch in case we would run into Cranks. A soft yawn escaped from my lips as I pinched my arm to make sure I wouldn't fall asleep.

After being rescued by the Right Arms, they tested our blood. The results that came out were shocking. It turned out that not all of use were immune to the flare, which means that some of us would change into a crank sooner or later. Our leader, Rhain, couldn't leave them behind- that's why we went our own way. Only some of the girls we had been with for years decided to go with the Right Arms, easy for them to decide since they are immune. Only a few followed us, and now we were down to six.

"Cey?" I heard a soft voice say.

I turned my head around to see the youngest among us awake, she was rubbing her eyes as a soft yawn escaped from her lips. "Should I take over?".

I shook my head, "it's okay Emme, just sleep" I told her.

Emme is only thirteen years old and by far the youngest of us. That's why I always treated her as my sister, I wanted her to be well rested for the rest of our journey.

Sometimes I wondered if I had any siblings, if my parents were still alive. I had so many questions but no answers, it was killing me sometimes. But then again I had to stay strong, after the old second-in-command left to be with the Right Arms- Rhain gave me the title even though we weren't in the maze anymore- but she wanted to have someone she could trust, who would have her back and won't betray her. That's the only reason why we kept the title alive.

"Are you sure Cey?" Emme asked again.

I gave her a smile, "Emme please go to sleep, I'll just kick Jessica awake in a minute".

The girl looked at me with a doubtful look before shrugging.

She was right though, it was now my turn to sleep. I look around until I notice the one person I was looking for and give her a kick in her shin, causing her to wake up with a yell.

"What was that for" she asks with a mad undertone.

I roll my eyes as I lean back against the wall, "it's your turn, I'll go sleep and I expect that when I wake up I still have my face".

Jessica huffs, "you're still complaining about that? Yes you woke up once because a Crank was screaming in your face".

"I pretend I didn't hear that" I tell her before looking over at Rhain who was still peacefully sleeping, "you don't wanna end up as Crank food right".

She let out a few more huffs while giving me the evil eye.

But honestly I don't care, she almost let me die once and if I die for real tonight- so will she. I will be haunting her for as long as possible.

I lay down next to Emme as I close my eyes, I had no idea I was this tired. Sleep washes over me and before I know it I'm knocked out.

-

The next morning I wake up because of a heavy weight leaning on me, it annoys me since I can't turn and it makes breathing harder.

When I open my eyes I notice Jessica leaning on me, see? Even in her sleep she's annoying me. Her mouth is slightly open as she was letting out soft snores. If I had liked her then I would have let her have 5 minutes but since I don't- I kick her off of me.

She let's out another yell as she falls on her back, "what the shuck Ceylon" she yells as she stand up to storm at me.

I blink as her attitude doesn't get to me, "what".

Jessica let out another annoyed grunt before storming towards me.

"Don't make me kick you in the balls" I warn her as I raise my feet.

"Cut it out children" we hear Rhain mumble as she's rubbing her temples, "good morning to you all too. Let's pack up and get going".

I nod as I put my hoodie back in my bag, glaring at Jessica.

Rhain crouches down next to me as she let out a soft snicker, "Cey you do know that girls don't have balls right".

I grin as I pat her back, "I know Rhainy".

"Then let's go before Jessica wants to drop kick you again".

I swing my backpack onto my back as I chuckle at Rhain's comment. "Girl as if she can dropkick me".

"You're lucky she's not here".

Of course I knew Rhain was right, maybe I should be nicer to Jessica because in the end we are all stuck together.

"Okay girls let's go now before we run into some cranks, we know the mission. So let's get this over with"

We gave her a simple nod before following her out of the abandoned building, we were lucky we didn't run into cranks last night. It was almost too good to be true.
