It had been a while since I've had a good night of sleep, it was as if I got all my energy back that I had lost the last few days. I decided to let what happened go, what good was it to keep holding onto the past and keeping grudges. It wasn't going to help us get any further to our goal.
But of course it's easier said then done.
We continued our trip after Aaliyah woke up Rhain. It had been Thomas who had stopped Jessica from waking our leader up to give her a little more rest. The rest of us had been confused since we hadn't seen them being so close- well at least I didn't. A part of me shouldn't have been confused since Thomas was the one looking for Rhain on that fateful day.
The trip had been peaceful so far without complaining or being followed by cranks, well that was until our drama queen started again.
"Gosh when will this be over" Jessica said a little loud followed by a loud sigh.
I roll my eyes, here we go again.
"Do not start" Aris said as he raised his voice slightly.
It took us by surprise since he was the last I had expected to talk back at Jessica. Even the girl herself looked confused, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at him.
"Oh wow he didn't" Aaliyah said in shock, a smile decorating her features because she clearly enjoyed it when people would tell her off.
Aris on the other hand frowned at the girl, "stop complaining and keep walking".
After that he bumped his shoulder into her hers as he passed her. Leaving every single one of us in shock. What had happened to that silent boy we met days ago? The one I tackled to the ground.
Maybe he was finally showing his true nature, because I've heard from Newt that they didn't know Aris much longer then us. He told me that he, Thomas, Frypan and Minho were from Group A- the only exception was Aris who was in an all girl maze.
"Wow I like the sass" I mumbled as I continued walking.
Thomas patted Aris' shoulder with a smirk.
"What was that" Jessica said softly, still in shock by the words of the younger boy.
I feel an hand on my lower back as we walk, of course I know who's the owner of that very hand. With a small smile I look into the brown eyes of Newt. His little action almost making me forget that we are with the others.
I bite my lower lip as I remove his hand from my back, "Newt you have to limit the affection in public" I whisper, "only Rhain saw us".
Newt rubs the back of his neck, making me get suspicious of his behavior, "well I had a talk with Rhain. She clearly knows" he tells me in an amused tone, "and please stop biting your lip, it makes me want to kiss you" he says with a wink, biting his own lower lip.
I feel my cheeks heat up as my mind processes his words, what was he thinking?
"Are you okay Ceylon" the voice of Thomas asks.
Shocked I look up at him, "ah yeah I'm just thirsty" I quickly say as I open up my bag to look for my water bottle, next to me I hear Newt chuckle.
"Oh okay, do you need a break? It's okay if you need one, we're getting closer to the city" he continues.
I see that Jessica is almost pleading me to say yes. But what has she ever done for me? She was the reason why Emme is dead, the reason why we often get chased by cranks- no I was not doing her this favor.
It would feel as if I'm rewarding her for her bad attitude. Besides I could still walk for hours- something she has never heard of.
I shake my head with a small smile, "no it's okay Thomas".
He nods as we continue walking again, as soon as the others turned their backs towards us- I give Newt a shove. I can't believe they caught me blushing at his comment.
"Sorry love" he says, clearly amused by me.
But I chose to ignore it, instead deciding to walk beside Aris. He might be teasing me because of Newt's words, but at least he's not teasing me. The younger boy looks pleased to see me again, it felt nice spending time with him. It was nice to see how someone could open up to you, even if it was in a slow pace.
Not that I should be one to speak.
"Hi love nice of you to join me" he chuckles.
I give him a playful push, causing him to almost fall face forward in the sand by my sudden action.
"Well how nice of you to make that girl finally shut up" I reply.
We look over our shoulder at Jessica who was sulking again. "She was shooting daggers at you just a second ago, she must be upset you declined the offer to rest" Aris says, suddenly sounding very formal.
"Aris no need to sound so formal, it's me shank".
We chuckle softly before there's another moment of silence between us.
Honestly I prefer moments of silence instead of the screaming sounds of cranks who are out to kill us. I would hate it if we lose another one of us to those cranks, it had to stop. If this continues then none of us will get to end Ava Paige. We started with six of us, and there's only four of us left.
I try to swallow the lump away when I think about Emme again. It stills, such a young girl we couldn't keep alive. Her life ended before it began.
A pat on my back brings me back, "are you okay" I hear Aris ask.
I simply nod, knowing that if I talk now I might end up crying. I don't want to be the reason for another break- we have to keep going and finish our mission. After that I might have enough time to cry my eyes out.
