There's no other

The following day the three of us stood in Forever 21. Alyssa and Mila were digging through the racks like their life depended on it. Taking turns, they held up outfits for me to try on. Obviously it was a big deal for them, but that was something I could only understand so much of. Dresses weren't really my thing and only wore them when I really had to. Nevertheless I tried some on to please them, knowing damn well that I would go for the black skirt I had just seen. When we had entered the shop I also noticed a pair of shoes that would go well with the outfit I had in mind.
Eventually I managed to convince them to let me buy the outfit of my choice - which wasn't an easy task. When I finally paid, Alyssa still had to choose her outfit.
She was divided between a tight red dress and a purple dress with a low cute back, which had a small belt around the waist. How she was so insecure sometimes, I didn't know. She could wear anything and still look stunning.
Eventually she settled on the purple dress and a pair of heels. "Or should I just-"
"No," Mila and I cut her off. We both weren't up for shopping anymore. We had been in and out of five shops already, and Alyssa was as indecisive as she could possibly be.
When she had changed back into her normal clothes and paid for the dress and heels. Then we had everything we needed and we went to drink something at the food court. Just when my drink arrived I got a video call from Luke.
I declined it. No matter how much I missed him, I wasn't gonna ditch my friends. Texting him that I'd call him when I got home, I put my phone in my bag.
At that moment Sam came walking towards us. It was like the guy followed us: lately we had run into each other a lot. Or so it seemed...
"Ugh, help me." I sighed, lowering myself in my chair. My best friend didn't really help; they  just smiled at him and he grabbed a chair.

"Hey beautiful ladies." He flirted and touched my arm for a moment. Rolling my eyes at him I slapped it away. He tried to grab the shopping bag I had placed under my chair.
I snatched the bag out of his hand.
"You can't see it yet. You'll see it in a week or so, or whenever your party is." I really wasn't in the mood to talk to him.
Sam grinned, "A surprise then. I like surprises."
"Good for you. Well, I have to go." I informed my friends and gave Mila the money for my drink. Giving my two friends a hug, I rolled my eyes again at Sam. I really didn't like him. He was obviously trying to get something done with me and I absolutely hated it.

Instead of walking home I took the bus and immediately called Luke. Telling him about Sam was clearly out of the question. Besides, it was nothing and I was certain that he would get mad, given the fact that they weren't the best of friends. It would ruin the rare time Luke and I had together.
Very happy that he answered immediately, I blew him a phone kiss and that made him smile. That smile... How I had missed that. Not having seen that in weeks it was the best thing to see right now.
"Hey babe!"
I loved it when he called me that.
"Hey, how are you?" I asked and he answered with, "I'm fine. I've finally gotten a day off! Or rather, a night. It's three am here, but I just needed to hear your voice. Hey, have you been shopping?"
Luke had noticed the bags in the background and he insisted that I showed it. I showed him the skirt, blouse and shoes that I got. It was not a very casual outfit so I decided to tell him what I bought it for. He would probably notice on social media that I was going to Sam's party anyway, so being honest seemed like the best thing to do.
His smile disappeared and I felt his mood change as if we were in the same room.
"Just watch out, okay? I know enough about Sam to know that he likes to play games, and you are MY girlfriend, he has to know that."

"Love, you don't have anything to worry about. It's just a party, and besides, I'm only going because my friends asked me to. There's no other-"
I wanted to say reason, but Luke cut me off. "Well... there's something... never mind, okay? I'll speak to you later."
He quickly hung up without a goodbye or anything, he just ended the call. Wondering what just happened I stared at my phone screen, pondering over whether or not I should call him back. I pressed the call button, but it immediately went to voicemail.
I didn't leave a message. He would call me back if he really cared. Maybe something just went wrong, maybe someone else called. But the fact that he hung up when I said "There's no other" was a little suspicious.
My mind was going crazy and I couldn't stop overthinking.
Did that mean he had someone else? I didn't like the way he ended the conversation at all. Even though we made a promise that we would trust each other, he made it really hard for me right now.
Not being able to fight the urge to text Luke again, I grabbed my phone. I didn't get a text back.

This was definitely not good, and I was on the other side of the world, completely powerless.
