Suspicious

Sam stopped me in my tracks to talk to me. I agreed and we placed ourselves on a bench, him sitting so that he was facing me. The bell rang, but assuming that this wouldn't take long, I decided to listen to him.
"First of all, I'm really sorry," he started, "Toby shouldn't have told you about my sister, but he just can't keep his mouth shut, that motherf-"
"It's okay," I cut him off, not knowing if that was to convince myself or him, "However, I want to know more about her, and Jack suggested that I should come with you to visit her."
Sam frowned, "I'm not sure abou that, she's still in a bad place mentally and if she hears that you're dating Luke she'll freak out. Neither of us will be able to handle that. Besides, we're not even that good of friends."
"We are friends," I placed my hand on his shoulder for emphasis. It really was true, I considered him a friend now. Lately he really had listened to me and respected my boundaries more. I had grown to like him. "And I won't mention anything, I'm not stupid. Of course I'll keep my mouth shut about Luke."
"I could do with a little more trust in you," he sighed, "So, I was planning on going Wednesday, is that okay?"
Of course I agreed. If I didn't do this on a short term I would chicken out.
When everything was settled we headed to class. We were now ten minutes late, and when we walked in everyone stared at us, including the teacher. My cheeks heated up. Talking to random people in the hallway was something I could handle, but people staring at me was a whole other level of uncomfortable.
I quickly sat down next to Alyssa, who had an amused look on her face. Luckily she didn't mention anything, but I knew exactly what she was thinking. Probably the same thing as everybody else.

Sam didn't make it any better, because at lunch he gestured for me, Alyssa and Mila to come over to the table where he and his friends were sitting. Before I gave it a second thought, Mila had already pulled us over. She was very eager to talk to Toby. I sighed when Sam pushed me onto a chair next to him. I gave Mila an annoyed look: I had had enough attention for the day. Or even the week.
My phone buzzed, and since lunch was the only time our school allowed us to use our phones, I immediately checked it. It was a text from Jack, asking me how the conversation with Sam turned out. Sam was obviously reading over my shoulder, and I smacked him on the arm.
"I don't get how Jack can be so nice, while Luke is just so-"
"He's still my boyfriend," I snapped to make him shut up. Luke was mine, and feeling like I had to defense him all the time was tiring. Sure, Luke and I hadn't talked much in the last couple of weeks, but that didn't mean we were any less of a couple. He was just busy, rehearsing all day and playing sold out concerts at night.
Unfortunately none of my friends seemed to believe that, and they still didn't see the reasons why I liked him. However, I couldn't help but agree on the fact that Luke could be a little cold and distant sometimes, but surely he didn't mean to be.

After school I found Jack sitting on the front porch of my home.
"Hey, are you okay?" I opened the door, knowing exactly why he looked so sad. He had been visiting Caroline today, something I knew he didn't take lightly.
He just shrugged and sat down on the couch.
"It's just hard to see a girl hurting so much, but at least she seems to be doing a little better. But when you mention Luke, which she often does herself, she still freaks out. By the way, how did the convo with Sam go? Your text was a little vague."
I elaborated on my plan a little, and that made Jack smile. We then sat in silence for a while. That was the thing with Jack: we didn't need to say much to each other. Most of the time we talked a little and then just let the words sink in.

After a while the doorbell disturbed the peace and I went to open it. In front of me stood Celeste, Jack's girlfriend.
"Hey Jessy! I haven't seen you in such a long time!"
We happily greeted and hugged each other and I let her in. It was nice to see her again. I had always liked her, not only because she was Jack's girlfriend, but also because she was like a big sister to me. Unfortunately I didn't see her as much as I'd like to. She went to college far away from Sydney, and when she wasn't studying, she'd be travelling with Jack.
"Jack wasn't home," she said, "So I assumed he would be here. He always brags about the amount of food you have in your home."
"Well, come in then," I grinned, "We have to check if he hasn't eaten all the food yet."
Celeste laughed when she saw Jack sitting on the couch eating cookies. She made fun of him a little before giving him a kiss. They clearly were still very much in love, even after five years of being together. I wanted that too, with Luke.
I poured Celeste a glass of water and I sat down on the ground.
"So, how's Luke?" She asked at which I shrugged.
"Just the same. I haven't heard much from him, but he's coming home on Saturday, so that will change hopefully. How are you?"

"I'm fine, doing good at college, but everything has been the same for a while now."
After catching up with her a while, chatting about everything and nothing, Jack and Celeste went home. Jack was now close to having a food baby and I myself was about to prepare some food - if he had left anything!
Just as I closed the door behind them, I heard my phone ring with the familiar ringtone I had set for Luke. I grabbed it as fast as I could.

"Hey babe," he said, "How are you?"
Besides the fact that we hadn't spoken for days and that I heard some things about you that are very bad, I'm dandy, I thought to myself...
"Fine," I instead said, deciding not to mention anything about Caroline. I wanted to tell it himself, even if the chance of him bringing it up was similar to none, "How is tour?"
"Fun, but exhausting. I can't wait to see you again."
"Me too," I giggled, which was very unlike myself, "Where are you right now?"
Maybe I was a bad girlfriend, but keeping up with his tour schedule was not my strong point.
I heard a lot of cars in the background. And I heard a girl's voice say, "Lukey?"

That was clearly not a fan. There wasn't any screaming involved and it didn't sound like he was in an arena. It was more like she actually knew him. Even I didn't call him 'Lukey'. He hated nicknames.
"Eh, I'm on the road, waiting for the tour bus to arrive. Why?"
And again I heard the girl say, "Lukey, I'm cold, can I have your jacket?"
Nope, clearly not a fan. I heard some rustling and then I heard the voice say, "Thanks baby!"
Baby? Oh no, we weren't going there. I had called him 'baby' once before and he hated that. He let me swear never to say that again. But now he seemed to accept it.
"Who's that?" I asked, now a little pissed off and very jealous.

But he had already hung up.
