Emma's P. O. V.
"We'll go to the courthouse and get married and then I'll take you on a trip wherever you want for however long you want to be away," Charlie said holding my hand.
"I can't wait. I wish we could do it right now," I said running my hand through his hair.
"We could if it weren't for this stupid bullet wound," he joked. I smiled and leaned forward and kissed him.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you, t- ow!" He yelped. My eyes went wide.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He started groaning in pain and the monitor started beeping loudly. I ran to get help. I rushed back to his side, but the nurses pushed me back. I stood and cried, not knowing what was happening.
The doctors were saying so many different things that I didn't understand. My brain was full of so many different scenarios. It wasn't until I heard the heart monitor flatline. My heart dropped. The lump that formed in my throat was so big I couldn't breathe at all.
"Ma'am, could you step outside please?" A nurse asked.
I stood, frozen, for a second. The nurse took my arm and helped me walk outside. I stood against the wall, and slid down. I couldn't feel anything at all. My whole body, my whole brain, my whole everything was completely empty. I was empty without him.
The nurses said they were doing the best they could, but he was already gone. I could feel my heart break into a million pieces and I knew that it was too late. He was gone. Charlie was actually gone.
I don't know how long it was, but I finally calmed down enough to open my eyes. I pulled out my phone and called Wren. I told her what happened and dropped my phone in my lap. I dropped my head in my hands and stayed there until Wren got there.
"Em!" She sat on the floor and wrapped her arms around me. I felt Jack sit on the other sat and wrap his arms around me too.
A nurse came out and asked us to come inside. Wren and Jack helped me stand up and we all walked inside. Seeing Charlie's lifeless body made me feel even worse than I already was. I fell into Wren and his my face in the crook of her neck. I didn't want to watch him, but not see his chest rise. I didn't want to touch his hand, but not feel his heart beating.
"I'm so sorry for your loss. Our doctors tried what they could, but were unsuccessful. The bullet wound caused internal bleeding, but after the surgery. The bleeding caused organ failure, which caused his heart to stop. Charlie Mason's time of death was 11:37 on May 2, 2018."
My shoulders shook as I wept. They asked us to leave so they could prepare him for the morgue.
Wren's P. O. V.
"Jack, I'm gonna stay with Em for a few days. Just to make sure she's okay." Em was sitting in a waiting room chair, staring blankly at the wall.
"Okay. Just call me if you need anything." He kissed me, then went and hugged Em before leaving the hospital.
"You ready to go?" I asked walking over to her. She wiped her tears and nodded, handing me the keys out of her purse.
"I guess I'm glad that the last thing we said to each other was 'I love you'," she said in the car.
"Yeah." It was silent the rest of the drive. I helped Em into the building and up to her apartment. She stumbled into her room and fell onto her bed.
"Do you need anything?" I asked her.
"Will you get me his UCLA sweatshirt. And...can you lay with me?" I gave her a soft smiled. I brought her his sweatshirt, then slid underneath the covers.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
"It's okay." I held her in my arms and played with her hair until she fell asleep.
