Max🐾

It hurt quite a bit to see that, but I was happy at the same time.

This was probably the break up between me and her. I stood there staring and slightly smiling. I didn't notice that both of them were looking straight at me now.

I changed my expression to look hurt and I walked over.

"Melissa?"

"Max! I-well, I've been meaning to tell you-"

"We're done? Yeah, I figured. We are done."

I saw her face change to hurt, I had never seen that look on her, so I turned away quickly and walked off with a secret smile on my face.

I walked back home told my mom everything.

"Hey, mom, remember the girl you found very nice for me before school started?"

"Oh, yeah, she goes to your school now, I've seen her once or twice."

"How would you feel about meeting her as my girlfriend?"

She came over and gave me a quick hug.

"Wait, but what about that other girl, the one you liked before?"

"We broke up," I said.

"Yay! I would love to meet that girl as your girlfriend! She seems like a really nice girl!" she said excitedly.

"She is- she's the best."

The next day at school I spent a lot of time with Clover. During classes, and walking to the bus, but it didn't end off so smoothly. I had tried to introduce her to more of my friends and she seemed terrified. Terrified of people. That got me wondering why.

"Hey, Clover, why are you so shy?" I asked suddenly.

"Isn't it obvious?" she said looking down.

"Sorry, it's just- I don't know why you're kind of scared of people."

"Let's not talk about this please," she tried to change the topic.

"No, answer me, please," I continued.

"People treat me differently, you just wouldn't understand." She looked away.

"Then show me how to understand. Clover, I want to understand you," I pleaded.

She took a few seconds to answer. "Why do you care so much about me?" she asked. "It's not like I ever gave you a reason to. Did I?"

"Because-"

"Do you feel sorry for me?" she asked.

"No." I had been thinking about telling her how I felt all day, and I knew that this might be my best shot.

"Then why do you-"

"Because I like you," I finally said.

"Well, I know that. We're friends, aren't we?" she said. I couldn't believe what she had said. Was that all she thought of me? Maybe she doesn't know how I meant it.

"That's not what-"

"Not what?" she asked calmly.
