Max 🐾
Clover told me what Terry said to her. I was finally relieved. After Prom I decided to walk with Clover around the school. Although, I couldn't resist kissing her in one of the classrooms. I guess that was her first ever 'make out.'
The last day of school was fun, we were all there together and took one final picture. The class picture.
We said goodbye to Terry when he moved away that summer.
The next 3 years flew by, and then it was time to go. We were all 18. All ready to leave.
I remember throwing my cap up in the air with Clover. I feel like I relive it every day.
Me and Clover were actually leaving together. We decided that being together in college was the best idea for both of us. And so it was.
We spent 4 years together in college then. Our lives flashing before our eyes. We graduated and were now adults.
I remember our celebration party.
"You got everything for today?"
"Yup, hey Max, what have you been looking at on your phone? You've spent a lot of time on it now."
"Oh, nothing important. Just spent a lot of time on this new game I got."
That was a lie, I hated lying to her, but this was the biggest thing I had worked on. I had been doing research on this new treatment that had come out. It was supposed to be a miracle. It was supposed to be one of the greatest things ever.
It was supposed to make blind people see.
Last night I contacted the medics and had them agree to perform it on Clover. She just had to say yes. I was going to tell her tonight.
We got to the restaurant and set everything up.
People soon started to show up. Our parents got here and both Clover and I were relieved that they were getting along.
"Can we go get the cake? I love cake!" Clover said pulling my sleeve slightly.
"Sure, and after the party, I have a surprise."
"Is it for me, or for everyone to hear?"
"For you. We can tell them all later. Right now, just you."
"I look foward to it then."
We went to the kitchen to get the cake. I was upset that Kiki, Sebastian and Terry weren't here. They couldn't make it yet. We didn't even know if they were planning on coming back home like we did.
Clover's mother tapped her glass.
"Some people, most people," she said. "Have doubted my daughter. They have told me how sorry they were for me, as if I had nothing to be proud of. Clover, tonight you have proved them all wrong. You are an adult now, you are even in a steady relationship. I am proud of you, not just now, but I have been every year of your life... To proving them wrong."
"To proving them wrong," everyone repeated.
After the party, we stayed to clean up. Or, for me to clean up. We were in the middle of it, and then I went up and grabbed Clover's waist.
I recieved a swift elbow in my gut. "Ouch, that really hurt," I said laughing through the pain.
"Max! I'm so sorry, I was just lost in my thoughts. I wasn't thinking, it was a reflex, are you okay?"
"Yeah, say, um, listen, I wanted to give you your surprise."
"Oh, okay, is it an object?"
"It's more of news. I know you've noticed that I have been on my phone lately."
"Yeah."
"Well, I was actually working in my surprise."
"Huh?"
"Clover, last year, this study became public, it was a treatment to the eyes. It was to cure blindness. I found out. I have been calling and meeting with doctors for the past year, and everything is finally ready."
She stayed quiet.
"You just have to say the word. We could start next week if you're ready. I know how much you've missed the sky, the ocean, how you've wanted to see my face, your parents, everyone! This, my surprise, is offering you the chance to see me."
She didn't say anything.
"Please, please say something," I said quietly.
She gripped the table and face downward. I expected to hear a no. She looked up and said slowly, "Okay."
"Okay?"
"Yeah, let's do it," she said laughing.
"Really?!"
"Yes, yes, call the doctors and tell them that I'll start next week!"
I picked her up and spun her in a circle while we both laughed.
When I set her down she hugged me.
"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you for being in my life."
The next week they began. She was supposed to drop these drops of formula every day for two weeks.
She said it stinged and that it hurt, but she did it with excitement every time. Once the weeks were over, she was supposed to massage cream arou d her eyes for a month.
After she did that, they gave her more drops for the eye. She put those things in her eyes for 5 months.
The last day, when the formula would be injected, she told me, "My eyes don't feel as numb anymore. I feel like I can move them easier. They feel better."
"That's good." I answered.
We walked into the waiting room and I recieved a call.
I picked up. "Hey, is everybody there?"
"Yeah, we're all ready, just tell us when we can go," Terry answered.
I had called everybody to come and be here after Clover opened her eyes.
I waited there for hours. I bet it was about 7 hours.
Then, the doctor told me to go in.
