"Speaking of your parents, you never talk about home. Can you tell me about it?"
Alex's POV:
I froze.Crap.
Crap.
Crap!
I made the mistake. The mistake that was bound to happen. I knew that it was coming, I just didn't think that I would mess up this early into the game. But there is a chance at redemption here. If I answer in the right way, then I'll be okay. I just need to choose my words carefully. But first things first, should I tell the truth or lie. If I tell the truth, he'll put two and two together, which is something that can't happen. If I lie, I'll eventually get caught up in it. My last option is to avoid the question. By answering the question truthfully, but not answering it to the point where he knows exactly who I am. This type of answer takes a bit of time to form, but seeing that I've already taken more time than I should've, I stalled.
"Well, what do you want to know?"
"Hmm... Everything."
"Everything?" I let out a mixture of a chuckle and a giggle. "That might take a while."
He huffed. "Okay, fine. Tell me about your mom."
I instantly smiled. My mom meant the world to me. "Okay, let's see. My mom was married to another man, before she married my father and had me. She has brown hair, a bit darker than mine, actually." I gestured to my hair, then sighed. "She was the best. She was the one thing that made me go home after school when I really wanted to run away. She was calm. And her favorite game was to tease me about everything." I let out a short laugh and sniffled. I needed to stop, I was getting to emotional about this.
Tyler still sat in the chair directly in front of the sink, where I currently stood. He seemed very interested in family, which made me smile. The smile disappeared when he asked "Why would you want to run away?" Great. Another question I was hoping to avoid. I swallowed and looked down, tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear. I was preparing to tell him something that I haven't told anyone. Ever.
"My dad used to... hit me." I whispered the last part. I looked up to see Tyler's eyebrows pulled together in confusion. I didn't blame him. "The company that he works at was bottoming out. The sales slowed down by a lot, and he blamed me for it, despite the fact that I had nothing to do with it." I chuckled sadly. "He called me his demon child and told me that I deserved every slap, punch, and kick he gave me." I sniffled. I wasn't going to cry in front of Tyler. I couldn't cry in front of Tyler.
"He used to hit you. As in past tense?" His voice turned soft, and it was nearly a whisper.
"I left them." Tyler's brows pulled together in confusion. "I eventually ran away and came here, but not for that reason." I saw him open his mouth as he was about ask another question and quickly added, "And don't ask me why I left, because I can't tell you." I began walking towards the stairs to get to my room, but stopped when I felt his arm snake arm my waist and turned me around. I hadn't realized that the moisture that was building up in my eyes spilled over the edge until he brushed his thumb under my eyes and wiped away the traitor tears. I mentally cursed. I did not want to cry in front of Tyler.
He suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace, stopping my train of thought. My mind was completely blank until he said "You don't ever have to hide things from me. Let me be your safe place, okay?" Not trusting my voice, I simply nodded and hoped he understood. I wrapped my arms around his torso and his were wrapped around my shoulders. I wanted to stay in his warm embrace for the rest of eternity, but he pulled away much too soon, despite my groans of protest. And as if on cue, the doorbell rang. Tyler went to go answer it and I thought it must be a neighbor or one of Tyler's friends until Tyler called my name from the front door, letting me know that the person at the door had come for me. I walked to the door with a bit caution, not knowing what to expect. But when I saw the person at the door I could feel the tears well up in my eyes. I could feel my heart quickening as I gasped.
