XXXIV. The Daughter
Itachi was still bothered. Why would they let the healer go so easily? He was planning to trace where Tobi was and figure out his new plan. He had no clue. After some time, he sat alone on a tree, far from his brother and their captive. He needed time to think alone. Think of their next plan. Think of what might be Tobi's next plan. He could only come up with one idea. Tobi might have found something as great as a healer. He wasn't the type to give up that easy.
But what could it be? He couldn't wrap his mind over it.
He wanted coffee for some reason. It helps him think, or so he believes. A memory of Izumi smiling in the kitchen as she stirs his coffee, floated into his mind. She always makes coffee for him in the morning before he heads to the university. Manipulating her memory was a challenge. It was an easy task but what made it harder was his own will. As if he didn't want her to lose a memory of him. She was the best thing that probably had happened to him in that world.
He shutted his thoughts out. Afraid that his brother might suspect him of being soft, and most especially, breaking the rules.
Thinking about it, it's as if he lived a second life. A normal life. He was in a world in peace, unlike his dimension now. No matter how tempting it was to forget about all of this and be normal instead, he needed to finish his mission, a mission passed to him by their father.
Sasuke, on the other hand, was astounded as he had heard her name. Haruno, Mebuki. It rang a bell.
"Wait." The Uchiha stopped her. "Do you happen to have a daughter?" Mebuki's eyes grew, as if she was not expecting his sudden question. "I- I- don't." She muttered nervously.
"You are a bad liar." Sasuke paled, but was now bothered, "Tell me the truth." There was authority in his voice he couldn't control, and Mebuki felt it. The heaviness. It was a familiar feeling. Similar from the masked man. Perhaps she was wrong about her judgment to this man."No, I don't." She was determined to say it. Besides, it was true as it seems. He had lost his husband and left her child all alone with no one to take care of her, she couldn't probably survive without them. They must've taken her like they did to her husband. Those monsters. Those devils. They tortured and killed them. Her only hope of living were all gone, and she wanted to die too. There was no point in life without them.
Sasuke chuckled but he was nervous as he ran his fingers through his hair, "I hope you're telling the truth." He swallowed. Now that he had thought about it, of all days, why would Tobi release this healer? The healer he kept for years? Why now? Had he sense something?
"This morning- did you hear it?" Sasuke said, now calm. Realization dawning into him.
"W-what are you talking about?" Mebuki deadpanned.
"Did you hear it?"Mebuki couldn't process his words correctly but she knew what he had meant. He was right. He was right. She had heard it. A small cry of help. Calling out to her. Calling her mom. She was in agony, and she cried. She thinks it was her baby daughter. Crying out to her, asking for help and she couldn't do a thing. When her calls faded, she knew she was gone and the only thing she did was listen. She didn't want to live without her baby daughter. Not without her. They might as well take her own life too.
"I was at my most vulnerable state when I heard it..." She sobbed. "I lost her.." Mebuki grieved.
"Explain." Itachi finally appeared. Furious and interrupting the two. He only heard a few of their conversation.
