''Anna?'' I heard my name being called and I averted my gaze from the glass wall that had stairs leading to a massive balcony on the 2nd floor of the house. George looked at me curiously, intrigued with something.
''Yes?''
''Is everything alright?''
I nodded, shifting on my seat. Why was he even asking that? It's not like he gave a fuck.
''Yeah, why?''
''Don't know. You seem off about something. Come on, join us, get a drink.''
''I'm okay, George, thanks.''
''Oh, please,'' He scoffed, getting up, going towards the kitchen, and coming back quickly holding a glass. ''here, have this.''
I got the glass in my cold hands, examining the drink inside. ''What's this?''
''Cuba libre. It's just rum and coke. I think you had that the last time.''
I forced a smile and nodded, sipping the drink slowly. ''Thanks.''
For a while things were still the same, only changing the fact that I was now consuming alcohol. And then, Matt, who was just like me, not participating, started staring at me -- or at least I started noticing it. Who knows, he could've been doing that for the whole I time I was sat there and I didn't see it.
After a good ten minutes, I finally looked at him too, and stared back. Nobody seemed to notice it, but I could feel something else in the air. It was something about him.
It annoyed me that he was always like that, mysterious and smug, saying disjointed things and acting like a little bitch, never letting you know if he liked you or not.
But it was something that… brought me to him, somehow. Attracted me, making me want to know more. I wanted to know more about him. I wanted to know all of his thoughts, have them in my hands, look into his eyes and understand him.
Before I knew it, I was standing up and walking towards the other side of the room, towards Matthew. For a second I panicked, noticing everyone looking at me, and then I awkwardly turned around, searching Ross' eyes, which I gladly quickly encountered.
''Loo?''
''I'll take you there.'' Matthew promptly said, standing up and taking my hand, before Ross could even answer.
He led me up a flight of stairs and to the end of a corridor to an open door, and turned on the lights. He freed my hand from his grip and it felt cold, making me want the contact back. I stayed quiet, though. And much to my discomfort, he winked, before speaking up.
''Get your business done in there, and come with me. I have something to show you.''
I nodded, keeping my usual straight face, and turned around, entering the bathroom and locking the door behind me.
After I was done, I walked quietly out of the bathroom, trying to find Matt, and I quickly did. He was sitting on the corridor with his eyes closed, but opened them instantly when I approached his figure. He smiled and stood up swiftly, holding my hand again as he led me somewhere else in the upper story of the house.
We had gone through countless steps until we reached the top; at first I couldn't see anything, and then Matthew opened this massive black curtain that covered huge windows, that lead to the rooftop. The view was beautiful, because even though it was a house, it was still quite tall, which made it possible to see the city lights in the distance.
We walked outside and the breeze froze my cheeks and nose, blowing my hair back, but it was somehow good. I felt, for the first time in quite some time, honestly happy. Not because of Matthew or Alex, or the view, but simply because I had nothing to think about. My mind was clear, and I was free. I felt infinite, powerful, like I could do anything, everything if I wanted to.
And I swear, I almost did.
