ALREADY GONE

You didn't do anything wrong he had told you and you were forced to push out a smile on your lips while internally, you were screaming at yourself for what you did wrong.

You hadn't even been dating him. This came from the biggest secret, the biggest crush of your life that you had ever possessed. You made the mistake of telling him.

"You're just my best friend, ____. You're great, smart, funny, kind, and all around fun to be around. You helped me out with so many things but I like her. We haven't been able to express our feelings lately but now we have."

You nodded, staring down at the ground with tears pooling in your eyes while Mike continued on and on about this girl who had way better qualities than you.

All you were was sweet, funny, and kind ____. You weren't anything special to him, and he made it pretty obvious that all you were was his best friend.

"You're just my best friend, you know. I like you, but not in the romantic type of way." Mike continued but you wished he would just shut up. "You didn't do anything wrong, ___. You can't control your feelings and I get it, I do. Just don't think you did anything wrong."

You nodded once again, shuffling your shoe into the dry dirt that layered the school's lawn underneath some of the dying grass for the winter time that was coming.

"Okay." You choked out, looking up at Mike who suddenly saw the look in your eye. He looked horrified at what he had said, at what had happened.

"I guess I'll just be your best friend. Just funny and smart ____. Nothing else."

Mike blinked out of shock at your words. He had made it seem like you were nothing to him, to anyone in fact.

"___, you'll find someone."

You shook your head, turning around and walking away from him as you headed towards the school, Mike's eyes on your back the entire time.

You were nothing but his best friend but it seemed like he was already gone before he could've even had the chance to be yours.
