Making a mistake as big as you did when you left Steve Harrington killed you in the end. It seemed like everything was okay, everything seemed to be going smoothly.
Perhaps too smoothly.
To the point where you ended up cutting things off in fear of him seeing someone else. No one was that happy when they saw you, were they?
-
You opened the door to your pantry, pulling out a box of cookies and walking over to your phone. You dialed Nancy's number and waited for her to answer."Hey, Nance?" You asked into the phone, biting into one of the chocolate chip cookies. You waited for her to answer your call.
"Yeah?" She said into the phone.
You bit into the cookie once more. "I made a mistake. A big one. Can a person love me that much?"
"Are you talking about Steve?" She asked.
You nodded to yourself. "Yeah."
You heard her sigh back in response to your phrase. "Listen, _____. He misses you a lot. It's Christmas and all he wants is to spend time with you but is afraid that you don't trust him enough."
You facepalmed your head. "Do you know where he is?"
She shrugged to herself. "I'm not sure, probably at the diner."
"Okay, thank you. I owe you."
You could feel her smile through the phone. "Anything for my best friend. Go get him back."
-
Jumping out of your car, you saw Steve sitting inside at one of the few booths in the chill cafe environment. He looked really upset and lonely. You dusted yourself off and stood tall, ready to take the hit if that's what it meant.
You walked into the diner, seeing Steve's eyes still outside on the few passing cars. You walked towards his table but it wasn't until you sat down in front of him that he looked over.
"_____?"
"Nancy told me everything, Steve. Listen, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I've had horrible relationships in the past and I couldn't trust those people. It damaged my trust with future relationships. I know I can trust you— you've proven it to me. So, once again, I'm so sorry for not putting trust in you."
Steve smiled. "____?"
You nodded. "Yeah?"
"It's okay. I get it. You have a right to not be able to fully trust me still. Those relationships were awfully toxic and I would be surprised if you didn't come out a little unnerved."
You smiled, grabbing his hand. "Truth is, I love you. I couldn't bring myself to say it any earlier because I was scared of you breaking my heart like all the others. Hopefully, you won't now that I've told you."
He shook his head. "Of course not."
A smile grew on your lips. Maybe you could learn to trust again. It would just take more time. But time heals all wounds.
Even the ones that seem unable to heal.
