"why do we have to be here?" you asked nancy who stood in the locker rooms to the pool, adjusting her swimsuit so it fit comfortably.

"because, ____," she began, "it's hot outside and you need a break from being around certain people all the time."

"you mean my friends?" you asked her, staring down at your nails. she sighed, turning to look at you.

"honey, carol and tommy are not your friends. steve can say they are but they are not. trust me, i know more than anyone."

you sighed. "fine, okay. maybe i just want it to be different between us."

nancy laughed. "trust me, they're not worth it."

you stood up. "okay, let's get going."

nancy nodded, grabbing her towel and walking outside with you. the sun beat down on your shoulders as you both continued to walk over to a set of chairs near the life guard chair that were the only ones in the shade at this moment.

you both sat down, nancy pulling out her sunglasses as she sat down on the chair. you were next, letting your hair down first and hearing someone begin talking to you.

"well, well, well, if it isn't _____."

you turned to see billy standing in front of you, a whistle around his neck. you crossed your arms.

"so, new life guard job?" you asked.

he nodded, leaning up against the stairway to the seat that overlooked the entire pool and fenced in area.

"yeah, it's just to earn a little money. plus, the view isn't so bad," he said, looking down your body.

nancy was silently watching the entire thing, seeing her mom staring over at billy the entire time as she gasped towards her mom's actions, still staying silent.

"mhmm, is that so?" you asked him, taunting him slightly. nancy gave you a grossed out look, but you simply ignored her.

billy licked his lower lip, removing his sunglasses and holding them in between his fingers.

"maybe you can come over sometime and we can really see the best view," he said, chuckling slightly.

you smiled at him, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "maybe sometime," you said, before sitting down on your chair and putting your sunglasses on as billy climbed up the stairs to the seat.

mrs. wheeler and the other moms stared over at you but you didn't notice them. only nancy.

"uh, ____, what the hell did i just watch?"

you smirked to yourself.

"we'll see in good time, won't we?"
