PRIVATE CONVERSATION

Your eyes found Steve's from across the room as you held the contact with him, tapping your pencil aimlessly on your desk filled with worksheets to complete over science problems.

He was so tempting. He was good at it.

However, Nancy leaned over and asked him for help on a problem which he turned his complete focus towards her.

His girlfriend.

You had been pining over Steve for about two years now, ever since freshman year of high school. Nothing had come about.

The bell rang, signaling a cut off to your current thoughts as you began packing your papers up. You let out a soft sigh, thinking of Steve and how it would be to date him.

You began walking out of the room when you overheard Nancy and Steve talking.

"You know, maybe it's best we take a break for a while. You're clearly into someone else other than your own girlfriend." Nancy told him.

"No, that's not it at all! I love you, Nance, she's just some girl. We haven't even had a conversation before! Our eyes met and like people do, we stared at each for a split second before looking away. That's all it was."

Not to me, you thought.

You leaned up against the wall, still listening to their private conversation.

"Steve, I've put a lot of faith in you ever since we began dating. I hope you're not lying about this." She replied.

"I'm not. Why would I ever lie to you?"

"I don't know, maybe you do have secret feelings for her." She told him. He laughed.

He laughed.

"She's just some girl! It's not like I'll ever have a conversation with her or anything unless it's, like, group assignments or something."

You grumbled a curse underneath your breath loud enough for them to stop talking and look towards the doorway where you were leaning against the wall.

"Hello?" Steve called out.

You didn't make a move nor a sound. You weren't risking anything here.

"I guess it was no one." He said, looking back at Nancy. "Come on, let's get to class."

You could hear the sound of her laughing as he pressed a kiss to her cheek, both of them walking out and passing you.

"Shit, I forgot my pencil. I'll be right back." Steve told her before turning around and seeing you walking inside the classroom.

You went over to your desk to grab the missing paper you had lost, on purpose of course, and shove it into your binder.

"Oh, hey, _____." He said, walking over to his desk to grab the pencil.

"So I have a name now, great."

He cocked his head in confusion. "What?"

You didn't look up at him, continuing to shove the paper somewhere in your backpack. It would be tossed out later anyways.

"Oh my god. You heard mine and Nancy's conversation." He said, causing your eyes to shift to his once agin.

"I'm just some girl who doesn't matter. That's what you said, right?" You told him, crossing your arms and giving up on the paper.

Steve sighed, pressing his fingers to his forehead. "_____, look, I'm dating Nancy and we're happy together. If I wasn't dating her, I would probably date you. But we're happy. For once in my goddamn life, I'm happy."

You nodded, going back to work on the paper.

Steve sighed. "Come on, _____. Any guy would be lucky to have you."

You felt tears falling down your cheeks as you wiped them up. "I swear to God if I hear another person tell me that- especially my three year crush- I will lose my mind."

With those words, you grabbed your bag and tried to leave but Steve wouldn't let you go easily like that.

"What do you mean?"

"You know how much it hurts you when a girl doesn't like you back or want to kiss you or even hang out with you but you like her?"

He nodded. "Yeah, it sucks so much."

You nodded. "Put some crying in the mix and you got how I feel whenever someone tells me that."

You shoved past him, trying to leave again.

"_____, I'm sorry."

"Nothing you can do." You told him. "Goodbye, Steve Harrington. For good, I guess."
