ALMOST PARADISE

Everything was always an 'almost' in your relationship with Steve Harrington.

'Almost' sweet, but just a little sour. 'Almost' perfect but still had some minor issues. 'Almost' cute but the relationship still had its flaws.

You always seemed to live up to Steve's expectations of finding someone meant for him, but you never felt perfect enough for you. It was that last 'almost' that you couldn't ignore.

"You alright, ___?"

You turned towards the figure who was giving you an odd look, books in her arms.

"Yeah, I'm fine." You muttered. Nancy wouldn't let you go that easily, especially since you were dating someone and ever since you had been, something had changed.

"No, something is wrong. What's up?" She urged on.

Silence settled softly. You paused to recollect your thoughts before speaking. "I don't think I'm good enough for Steve."

You waited for a lie to come from her, you waited for her to say something to try and help you, you waited for her to say something encouraging that wouldn't put you down but it didn't come.

"Maybe you aren't."

You closed your eyes, sighing, before shutting your locker and waiting for something else to come from Nancy who stood clutching her books to her chest.

"But," She piped up, catching your eye briefly. "I can guarantee Steve would agree with me when I tell you that you are more than enough for him."

You felt a bruised smile touch your lips for a split second before swallowing gently the once thick cotton ball stuck in your throat with the silence that waited for a response.

"Maybe you two should talk." She suggested.

You nodded. "Okay, thanks Nance."

"Anytime."

You stood nervously outside of the school building between the gym and the classrooms, waiting for Steve to come meet you.

The gym door opened, a loud thud was heard from it shutting and you heard the footsteps moving towards you before stopping in your line of vision towards the rocks and dirt.

"Hey, ____. Something wrong?" Steve immediately asked you. You two didn't have too many serious one on one chats and when you did, they were either arguments over something stupid or a crying session about why everything is going to be okay.

"Uh," You began, not wanting to meet his eyes. "Am I good enough for you?"

Steve didn't respond back immediately, which didn't really worry you because of how often silence was between you two.

"Why wouldn't you be? Did someone tell you this stuff?" He asked, crossing your arms as you kept your gaze towards the ground.

"No, no one had to tell me this. I told myself." You replied.

"And why the hell would you tell yourself that! Don't put yourself down, ___! You're more than enough for me!" Steve exclaimed, grabbing both of your hands in his. "More than enough."

You slipped your hands out of his before meeting his gaze. "Steve, our relationship is full of 'almost's. Almost, this. Almost, that."

"Isn't that how young love should be? We can't be certain of the future, ___." He responded back.

You nodded. "I guess, but I always feel like you're one step ahead of me in all the almost's we have. It's like, I'm almost enough for you but I feel ten steps back."

Steve sighed. He wasn't growing frustrated with you but more with himself for making you possibly think that you weren't close to enough for him.

"___, you're more than enough. Just because you feel not as confident as me-"

"It's not about feeling confident, Steve! I'm confident in almost everything I do!" You shut your mouth, the word 'almost' ringing in your ears. "There it is again."

Steve shook his head. "___, don't put yourself down because you don't think you live up to my expectations. You exceeded them. Every single one."

You wiped the small pool of water built behind your eyelid, a small satisfactory smile ghosting over your lips.

"We may not have our perfect moments but I'd rather have an 'almost' relationship with you than a 'perfect' one." Steve said, pulling you into his arms. "It's our special 'almost' paradise."
