Haunted

Witness Statement

The other day keeps playing over and over in my mind. If I hadn't tried to shoot him then Kate would still be alive. I killed her. I can tell the team has been watching me closely since everything happened and I have to tell them the truth starting with Gibbs.

I'm sitting down in interrogation when Gibbs comes in.

"What do you need me for?" Gibbs asks coming in and closing the door behind him.

"My witness statement I want to do it again." I tell him.

"Why, Is the something else you remember?" he asks.

"Not exactly, I just didn't tell you that it was my fault. I got Kate killed." I reply bluntly.

"This wasn't your fault. You did everything you could for Kate." Gibbs reassures me.

"You weren't even there." I say becoming annoyed.

"Ok, Tell me what happened then." He replies.

"He had Kate's gun to her head, I shot him in the shoulder and then he shot me in the arm. He said if I tried that again or moved he would kill her. He took a phone call he was distracted, she said that was her last bullet, I shot him, he shot her." I explain with tears in my eyes

"Megan this wasn't your fault, You believed Kate and that's what partners do." he tells me.

"I shouldn't have though, what agent goes out without any bullets in their gun? I should have known Gibbs and I could have stopped him." I question.

"You couldn't have stopped it. This wasn't your fault Megan." he tells me once again but I don't believe him. How can I?

"Why would Kate tell you that was her last bullet?" Gibbs asks me.

"I don't know" I reply frazzled by his question.

"She wanted you to take the shot, at least that way one of you would get out of their alive." Gibbs tells me.

"It should have been her Gibbs, she should have been the one to get out alive. I should have taken the back room. Let her take the register it was less risk." I argue.

"and then she would have been standing here saying the same about you. We're going to catch him and I swear to god it'll be a miracle if he gets out alive Megan." Gibbs tells me and I just smile a little. Gibbs may not be a man of many words but that just means what he says is always true.
