That day, Alison never thought that she would see Hayden again, not even when he is the son of her favorite Professor.
But boy, was she wrong. Because that was just the start.
For a year, she often sees him but he never noticed. She remembers how his smile lights up her world. How his eyes swallow her being. She remembered feeling ecstatic and giddy when he was around. She also remembered how her heart broke when she learned that he has a girlfriend. A beautiful girl that suits him. Nevertheless, she remembered being happy because he is happy. That was enough for her.
So imagine Alison's surprise when she saw Hayden at her work in a pub called Breakfree. She started working there as a waitress and a performer when she was in her first year in med school where she met the owner Nike and his now-wife, Olivia.
She decided to look for a job that would cover most of her daily expenses. Luckily, she found the Breakfree located in Quebec, an hour away from her place in Ontario. Breakfree is a little different from any other club here in Canada. Instead of neon lights and sex-craved party animals, tables were scattered along the place leaving no room for a dance floor.
The bar area is located at the back of the place, across the mini-stage where acoustic performers come and go. Foods and drinks are served by waiters and waitresses like Alison.
From the day she met Hayden, Professor Morgan talks about him more frequently than before. Like every time he gets a chance, he would talk about how he wanted to eat his pizza or how he would react to something, and that she would laugh every time.
If she didn't know any better, Alison might think that Professor Morgan wants to play cupid and shoot her and his heart and fall in love.
But, you see, even with your eyes closed, you will always fall in love at the right time, right place, the right moment, but weren't sure if it would be at the right person.
But in Alison's case, everything is in perfect order. Him, the place, the time, the situation. It was all perfect.
Yes. She fell. She fell hard.
Hayden often comes to Breakfree with his best friend or with his girlfriend, Nicole, since he discovered this place. But tonight was different. Adam was with his parents in Nova Scotia. And Nicole? She left, for good. And he was beyond devastated.
So when Alison saw Hayden sitting alone at the bar area of Breakfree that night, she knew she needed to do something to make him feel a little better. Even if she didn't have any idea of what was going on, she knew that something is not right, if the look on his face is anything to go by.
"Nike!" She called Nike's attention. It was one Tuesday evening, a very busy one. Usually, her shift is on weekends only but she works extra days here when she doesn't have classes. And this day is one of them.
Nike lifted his head from mixing drinks and looked at her.
"Can I perform tonight?" She asked. She usually performs only on Fridays and Saturdays but tonight can be an exemption, right?
"Huh? Why?" He asked.
"It's for free, don't worry." She winked at him then run towards the basement that she turned into her makeshift room. Nike and Olivia insisted that she should sleep in a comfortable place and offered Alison their spare room to stay in when she's working here. But she refused and chose to stay in the basement of this bar. She loved it and kind of transformed it into her small haven. A small bed, a bedside table, and a lamp on top of it, on the right corner, is the cabinet where she kept her things and a few clothes to change - this place is perfect for her. Small yet comfy, just like her apartment in Ontario.
