Stuck in the middle.

Chapter 36

I wake up later that day. Right above my right hip is a small scar. I lay for a minute then the nurse comes in.

"Everything is good. We are going to keep you overnight though just in case. Also there are two boys who refuse to leave the waiting room. Do you want me to send them in?" says the nurse.

"One at a time?" I ask.

"Sure," she says.

Then she walks out. A minute later she returns with Jacob. She leaves the room and shuts the door behind her.

"Hey," I say.

"Hi," he says.

"What time is it?" I ask.

"About 5:30."

"Then what are you still doing here?"

"Did you think I would leave without making sure you were okay?"

"I guess not." I say.

"Now that I see you are okay I should probably get home. My mom is probably wondering where I am," he says.

"Okay. Bye." I say.

He comes over and kisses me on the cheek then leaves.

A couple minutes later Mason comes in.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" he asks.

"Fine," I say, "Sorry if I worried you today."

"All that matters now is that you are okay," he says.

"And by the way don't worry about picking me up for school tomorrow. I have to stay here overnight."

"At least I have your phone number so I can text you now."

We both laugh and remember the last time I was at the hospital for Max.

The laughing dies and I say, "Thank you for letting Jacob come with us after school."

"It's fine. I can see he cares about you and you care about him too," he says looking down.

"Hey. I haven't made my decision yet."

"I know. And I hope you know that I'm not going to stop fighting for you."

"I wasn't expecting you to," I say.

He stays for a little while and we just talk. He gives me my phone back and tells me that my parents were here but they had to take Max to a friend's for the night. My parents were going to stay here with me. The nurse comes in and tells Mason he has to go home. We say our goodbyes then he leaves.

My parents get here about 15 minutes later. That night we stay in the same room that we stayed in when Max was here. That night I sleep with no dreams.
