There was a knock on the door.
"Go away," I shouted. There was no point in sounding polite if I wasn't letting whoever was out there inside anyway. There were tissues all over the floor, and I was huddled in my blanket makeup-less. I don't care who's out there, they're not coming in during my time dedicated to mental-breakdown-ing.
"Wait! It's-a me, Mario!"
My heart stopped. I was conflicted. Do I open it? Do I not open it? What do I do?
"And I'm here, too," someone else said. Female voice. It's Pauline, isn't it.
"Zelda's not here, so go look somewhere else."
"We're not here to talk to Zelda," Pauline sighed, "we're here to talk to you."
"Well, that's your problem, because Princess Toadstool isn't home right now!"
"But I can hear you in there, hon."
I wiped the ice cream off my lips and put the tub by the sink. I was dressed decent enough to go out, so we'll talk somewhere else. Not in here, that's for sure.
"I'm coming, I'm coming." I grabbed my crown--though it didn't quite match my...getup. I knew my eyes were red and puffy without even seeing it. They're going to know I was crying.
So what? I'm giving up. Whatever. They wanted to make me cry, it worked. Doesn't matter.
Even if I'm losing to Pauline.
...nevermind. I am not losing to Pauline.
If there's one thing I learned as a princess, its that makeup should always be on hand. Thankfully, I'm pretty skilled.
I applied concealer under my eyes while putting the ice cream away, swiped on some lip gloss, and quickly did my mascara. Good enough? I think so.
I opened the door. Sure, my sweats don't look so princess-y, but my face does, and that's what matters.
"Peach..." Mario looked dumbfounded. His eyes...his eyes were red and puffy too.
Suddenly I felt all the tears I pushed away come surging back up. I blinked hard, forcing it down. I'm not crying. Not in front of Pauline, at least.
"Peach," she started.
"No," I snapped. "I don't want to hear whatever sick excuse you're going to tell me for getting with my boyfriend."
Mario tried to talk. "Wait, we--"
I cut him off. "I don't want to know, Mario." I sniffed. "I don't want to know why you cheated on me, with her of all people."
I forgot about holding my tears back. Pauline's already defeated me. She beat me by a long run. Now its time for me to acknowledge it.
"No, Peach..." She put her arm on my shoulder. "I think it's something you might want to hear."
I slapped her hand off my shoulder. "Don't touch me, you lowly...woman."
Mario tensed. "Please don't talk to my friend like that."
"Your friend? You consider that girl your frie--"
It hit me then. Friend. Not girlfriend, not fiance, friend. I know that should have made me happy. But all it did was make me feel even angrier.
"Oh my goombas," I scoffed. "You're kidding right?"
Mario shook his head. Pauline shook her head.
"So now that you guys broke up, you're just going to get back with me? Is that what I am, a rebound?!"
Pauline's eyes widened. "W-wait, no, that's not what I--"
"I am the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. I'd hate to pull this straw, but," I inhaled sharply, "I might just exile you."
I stepped back into my dorm and slammed the door.
A/N: Ohhhhh drama! Do you think Peach is for real? This chapter is a bit...short, and not exactly eventful, but I think it's important for ya'll to know that Peach isn't so shallow that she'd get back with him so fast. I think her logic here is a little impulsive, but if I was in her shoes, I'd react the same, you know? Hopefully I can get a new chapter out soon so that there isn't such a huge gap between two chapters...okay, hope you enjoyed the chapter! Bye!
