Max's POV
The credits rolled and I looked over at the black haired boy. I rolled my eyes. He was fast asleep, his head on my shoulder.
I knocked on his forehead a few times, "Mike. Mike. MIKE!" He opened his eyes, startled.
I rolled my eyes again, watching him blink, "You fell asleep Sweaterboy," I looked at my shoulder which he had his head rested on just seconds earlier, "You contaminated my shoulder."
He chuckled, "I didn't know I was that tired. Sorry. I have a washer if you need it," he added slyly, just to annoy me.
I ruffled his hair, "Shutup."
We talked for about an hour and I checked my watch. It was 6:30. Shit. I was late for dinner.
I stood, ready to head out the door, "Max, wait."
I turned to face him, my orange hair swinging behind my shoulder, "What?"
"Talk to Lucas."
"Why? He doesn't want to see me right now."
"You guys don't seem okay right now. You should sort things out."
I groaned, "Fine! But only because you'll annoy me until I do."
"Okay keep telling yourself that that's the only reason," he smirked.
I flipped him off as I walked out the door. I heard him giggle behind me.
I smiled to myself. Mike and I are actually friends.
"Wow. This is more fucked up than I thought," I chuckled to myself as I skated smoothly down the pavement.
The Next Day
Lucas's POV
I walked reluctantly into the parking lot of the school. I frowned when I spotted Max and Mike arguing. Then they started pushing each other and laughing.
Dustin chuckled behind me, "What the hell happened to them?"
"At least they're talking," Will smiled at Dustin, amused.
"I'll tell you what happened. Mike stole my girlfriend," I snapped.
"Woah man. Calm down. I don't think it's like-"
But I stormed off before I let him finish.
Dustin's POV
Max and Mike strolled up to us, still smiling.
Mike looked at us, "Hey guys! What's goin on?"
I raised my eyebrows, "I don't know. You tell us."
Max and Mike looked at each other, confused, "What?"
"You guys were hanging out last night! You're like dating now!" I squealed.
Max furrowed her eyebrows, "Where the hell did you hear that?!?!"
"We aren't dating. The only reason that we were hanging out was to resolve our differences," Mike said to us and Max nodded.
"Yea. We just talked then watched Star Wars," Max replied.
"Why couldn't you pick up?" Will said.
"It was a really good part in the movie! And Max refused to stop it so we could talk."
"And then Mike fell asleep. Pussy," Max smirked.
"Hey! I had pneumonia! And you got butter stains on my sweater!"
"Oh shutup Sweaterboy!"
Will and I burst out laughing, "You guys are arguing like an old married couple," I said, wiping my tears.
"NO WE'RE NOT!" They said in unison.
We both laughed again, "It looks like you guys were meant to be best friends," Will commented.
Max looked around, "Hey, where's Lucas? I wanted talk to him."
"He saw you guys and he stormed off. He looked really pissed off," I explained.
Max looked looked down, "Oh," she looked to Mike and he smiled weakly at her.
The bell rang and we all sulked into the large school.
El's POV
I coughed for the thousandth time that day. My head pounded and my chest hurt. I should've listened to Mike.
A small smile crept on my lips. He got me sick. And the funny thing is, I wasn't necessarily mad about it. I was almost proud that he got me sick.
I closed my eyes and tried to focus. Max and Mike appeared. I frowned. They looked happy. What was going on? But before I could see the rest, a sharp pain attacked my brain. I coughed violently, wishing for Hopper to come home with the medicine.
It was too risky to leave in full daylight again so I had to stay home instead of going to the hospital.
I thought again of the smiles etched on their faces. Was Mike happy with her too? Was it all an act?
I shook my head, not letting the doubt overtake me. I was too preoccupied to think of that right now. I had to rest.
Lucas's POV
I glanced behind me at Max, who was fiddling with her pencil. My eyes moved to Mike who also had a pencil in his hand. He was scribbling something down on a piece of notebook paper.
Mike suddenly put his pencil down and crumbled up the paper. He stuck his hand down and passed it under the desk behind him, where Max sat.
She immediately took it and opened it. She frowned and jotted down what looked like a few sentences. She then leaned forward and shoved the note into the collar of his sweater.
He turned around and frowned playfully at her. She flipped him off under her desk.
I looked away. If I watched this any longer, I wouldn't be able to control my anger. There were only 10 minutes left of science before lunch. At lunch, I would be forced to talk to them.
The bell rang and I rose from my seat slowly. I made my way to the party's usual table. Will and Dustin came in, Dustin's already chewing on a 3 Musketeer. Max and Mike joined them, in deep conversation.
"But it won't work."
"Just try."
"Fine, but he hates me."
I frowned in confusion at the whispered conversation I overheard. Max looked up and she smiled cautiously at me.
She knew I was mad. She knew that I heard about them hanging out.
She opened her mouth, "Lucas-"
I stood up, leaving them behind. I heard footsteps behind me. A strong hand gripped my shoulder.
