Mike's POV
I watched the clock tick slowly as I waited for the last bell on the last day of school to ring. It seemed like the clock had been stuck on 2:45 for what felt like hours.
My foot tapped impatiently as I tried to focus on what the teacher was saying. I would've felt bad to be so distracted if this had been Mr. Clarke's class. I looked over at Dustin who wasn't focusing. I looked over to find him doodling some random shapes onto his note paper. Dustin never doodled.
Lucas and Will were playing tic-tac-toe on the edge of Lucas's paper, silently giving each other competitive threats.
I sighed, looking back down at my own notebook. I felt something hit the back of my head.
"Ow," I whispered to myself as I turned around to see Max smirking at me. I rolled my eyes, bending down to reach the crumbled piece of paper on the floor.
I smoothed out the edges, trying to make out Max's messy handwriting.
'I'm coming early to help you set up, sorry I have no life. And dudddddeeeee, your leg tapping is shaking the earth'
I couldn't help but roll my eyes again, 'Fine, you can come early. And I know you have no life. You're pretty boring actually. And I want this class to end. It's been 2:45 for hourssss'
I turned around in my seat and threw the paper, hitting the red head right in the face.
Her hand flew to her face, "Holy fuck, mother of-"
"Maxine! What is this about?" Mrs. Higgins stopped the lesson and put his hands on his hips.
"I'm sorry about the interruption, but Michael," she glanced at me, her eyes narrowing, "gave me a paper cut in the middle of my face. I am terribly sorry," she bowed, mockingly.
Everyone in the class looked from me to Max and there were a few snickers heard around the room, "Well Mike, I think that you owe Max an apology," Mrs. Higgins looked like she enjoyed punishing me.
"Sorry about impaling your forehead, Maxine," I looked at her, visibly seeing her annoyed at my calling her by her full name.
"Now, let's get on to the rest of the lesson with the 3 minutes we have remaining."
My head whipped around towards the clock. Mrs. Higgins spoke correctly. It was 2:57. I turned back to Max. She was reading the paper that I had thrown. She looked up at me, apparently feeling my gaze on her. She scowled at me and rubbed her forehead. I smirked, sticking my tongue out at her.
Suddenly, the bell rang. It echoed in my ears, telling me that I was free. The class practically erupted with joy, almost running out of the classroom.
I stood up, gathering my stuff.
"You little asshole," I heard a familiar voice behind me.
"You too Max," I chuckled.
"Dude, how did you manage to make that paper so freaking pointy? You gave me a dent in my face. Look at it!" She shoved her forehead into my face.
"There's nothing there," I laughed, Max punchng my arm.
Dustin, Lucas, and Will waited at the entrance of the classroom for Max and I.
"It's summer mai dudes!" Dustin yelled, throwing a fist in the air triumphantly. Will laughed with him, yelling just as loud.
"I'm so ready for this guys! We can do whatever we want. Get ready for late nights boys," Max exclaimed, elbowing Lucas slightly. He looked down, bashfully.
"This is honestly so great," I added, striding into the parking lot. I slowed down though, thinking about El. I didn't know if Hopper would let her out of the house.
"Why'd you just get so glum, chum?" Dustin hit me on the back.
"It's cause he can't be with his girlfriend," Max teased, poking me in the side.
I looked down, slowly letting the thought take over my good mood.
Will chimed in, "Come on guys. That isn't funny."
"But it is," Max whispered to Dustin, both of them laughing.
I shoved my middle finger in Max's face, "Well I stayed the night at El's and Hopper didn't kill me so I think I win."
Dustin and Will oohed loudly, "You stayed the night at El's?" Lucas asked me, seeming genuinely curious.
I nodded, "I kinda forgot to mention it. So yea."
We neared my house, the party separating, "Come on lover boy, let's go eat. I'm starving," Max practically dragged me into my own house.
"Hi Mrs. Wheeler!" She called cheerfully into the house.
My mom emerged from around the corner, "Hello Max! It's good to see you here again," my mom and Max got into an in depth conversation, "I guess I don't live here anymore," I muttered, chuckling to myself.
After a while, Max found her way into the kitchen, "Your mom is so nice. Can she adopt me?"
"No," I shook my head quickly. Max flicked my cheek, "I hate you Wheeler."
"The feeling is mutual," I looked at her for a moment and we both burst out laughing.
"Okay, we need to start baking mister," Max said, getting out various ingredients. I also grabbed some things from cabinets and the pantry.
"Okay, so the boys will want a lot of stuff, so let's make a triple batch," Max said, looking at the muffin recipe.
"Triple batch? More like quadruple batch."
She rolled her eyes, "Okay quadruple batch it is then," she started measuring out the flour, blowing her hair away every couple of seconds.
"Your hair is getting in everything, here lemme fix it," I grabbed her hair.
"Mike don't touch the hair. I don't want you doing something to it!" she smacked at my hands, getting flour on my knuckles.
"Just chill out. I have two sisters, I know what I'm doing," I said, putting her hair into a quick french braid.
"Oh god, Mike. What'd you do?" she said, patting the back of her head.
"Relax. It's called a french braid genius."
Max turned around, looking at me, "You can french braid?!" I nodded. She looked slightly impressed, "Wow Sweaterboy! Boy of many talents."
"The saying is 'man of many talents', Max."
She shook her head, "I meant to say boy, Wheeler," she chuckled, dotting my nose with flour.

I'm sorry about no Mileven but you got a little Madwheeler. I live for the brother/sister dynamic of Max and Mike. It's honestly the best thing ever.
