Lauren's POV

I squinted, trying to see who the people across the street from me were. Will...and Max.

I frowned. Max. I remembered Eleanor telling me about how Mike and her liked each other. She had hurt El. Why was she with Will now? Was she stealing him too?

I shook my head, ashamed that I had thought those things about a girl that I barely knew. Maybe El was just overreacting. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding.

I calmed myself quickly, trying to be the nice girl that I always was. I exhaled, making sure my smile looked genuine. It wouldn't be hard if Will was there.

Jogging over to them, I could hear their laughter. Saying that it didn't hurt would be lying. I was uneasy around Max. Just hearing Eleanor talk about Max and Mike made me feel like she was competition. Max seemed to be the type of person who was really good at winning. Yet I still swallowed my pride and put a smile on my face.

I moved closer, calling out to him, "Hey Will! Hi Max."

Will's eyes lit up as he looked at me, making my cheeks get hot as a rosy blush spread across my face, "Lauren!"

He put his arms out, inviting me to be held by him. It was a sweet moment that I didn't want to end. I felt safe, cared for.

I looked at Max, smiling. I fought the sense of uneasiness that seemed to swirl in my stomach.

"What are you guys doing out this early?"

Max shrugged, "We were the only ones awake."

I raised my eyebrows in confusion, looking to Will for an explanation.

"The party had a sleepover last night and everyone was asleep still but Max and I, so we decided to take a walk until they all got up."

I nodded. I wished that I was close enough to Will's friends to hang out with them. I barely knew them. A rush of sadness hit me as I realized that a girl that had only known them since the beginning of the year was in the party. They already had sleepovers together. I had been in the four boys' class since 2nd grade. Dustin was even my desk partner for three out of the seven years. Yet I didn't even know anything about them.

Max spoke up, saying something that surprised me, "Hey, do you wanna go to the pool with us later today?" She looked like she was almost pleading with me to accept.

"Sure! I would love to," I responded, not because of Max. But because of the slight smile on Will's face when he was waiting for my answer.

"That's great! We're probably going to Hungry Hammond's first. Probably at like 11. We'd love to see you there," the boy with the bowl cut exclaimed, glancing at me with a hopeful expression.

I grinned, "I'll be there."

"Cool," Will smiled right back at me.

Max broke the comfortable silence, "Hey Will, we should start heading back. We've been out for a while. Dustin's snoring probably woke them up, but if we need to, we can get some of Karen's pots and pans."

I couldn't help but notice the glint of mischief in Max's eyes whenever she spoke. I giggled slightly, "You two have fun. I'll see you later," I turned, moving away from them.

Will's POV

I waved, watching as she walked away. She looked so pretty today. Her hair was out and there was no makeup to cover her natural beauty.

I glanced back at Max, her eyes wide and her mouth wide open.

"What?"

She punched me in the arm, "Dude! What the hell was that?"

"What did I do?"

She mimicked my lame wave, "Are you kidding me? You call that a goodbye?" she rolled her eyes, nudging me to go to Lauren.

I roll my eyes right back at the red head, laughing and turning back to my crush.

"Hey Lauren, wait!"

She glanced back at me, her hair swishing behind her shoulder, giving me major movie vibes.

I swallowed nervously, walking right up to her, wrapping my arms around her.

She slid her hands under my arms, embracing me by the waist. We stood for what seemed like hours but I swore it ended too quickly.

She huffed slightly but I could tell she was smiling, "Will I have to go," she was giggling now.

I sighed inwardly, "Okay okay, see you later today."

Her face appeared to be shining as she let go of me, "See you too Zombie Boy," she winked adorably and turned away, leaving my heart racing and my breathe gone.

For some reason, I liked it when she called me Zombie Boy. She made it less like an insult and more like a thing to tease me with.

"Wow you're crushing hard man," I was sucked back into the present with the sarcastic remark from the ginger behind me.

I couldn't hide my goofy grin as I turned back to her. She obviously saw it and burst out laughing, "You need me to carry you back to Mike's, cause telling by that face, you're a goner."

I punched her lightly, "Oh shut up Max."

She continued to tease me, "No really. Your face is all red. I think you need a doctor," Max placed her hand on my forehead but I quickly swatted it away.

"Eat shit!" I laughed, sprinting ahead of her.

She followed, twirling in the middle of the road, "WILLY WILL IS IN LOVEEEEE!!!!"

"SHUT UP MAXINE!!!"

"DID YOU JUST-"

I smirked, "Oh yea."

Max's face scrunched up into a false angry expression, "I'm gonna get you Wizard!"

I was faster than she was. She tried to tackle me multiple times, her red haired flying wildly in all directions.

We were chasing each other in circles since she couldn't run as quickly as me since my growth spurt gave me longer legs.

I tasered her sides and she squirmed with laughter. Grabbing her waist I picked her up and spun her around, her smile getting wider and wider.

She was practically choking, "I didn't even know you could pick me up!"

I flexed my little arm muscles and she chuckled again. She slapped me playfully and continued to chase me down the street, all the way to Mike's basement door.

We entered loudly, laughing our asses off.

If the others weren't awake before, they definitely were now.
